  • Thanks for posting, back... and it makes me think just out of a sense of appreciation, who among us on this board are memorializing and honoring someone today who was in your life who served our nation? I'd love to read some short bios in this thread, if back doesn't mind me bending it that direction...

  • Went to the ceremony today at the Arch in H'ton.  It was fantastic.  Met a 96 year old WWII Veteran who was wearing his original issue uniform.  Awesome......

  • My father (passed in '98) was a WWII vet who lost his right leg just below the knee in  Belgium...recipient of the Purple Heart, Bronze & Silver Stars...displayed proudly in our family room...a REAL hero straight out Tom Brokaw's THE GREATEST GENERATION (anybody who hasn't read it MUST)...none of us understand the sacrifices necessary during the Depression and war to keep this country extant...

  • That generation suffered like no other.
That generation is what made us great.

It  (WW2)was the last war that someone died in fighting for your freedom.
Since then, everyone that has died fighting in wars has died fighting for someone else's freedom.

Equally important though, because they all did what they were told to do.

I totally understand what you are saying, but I disagree.  I would like to think that my time served, and my brothers and sisters that were lost, and the wars that were waged during my time were not only to fight for somebody else's freedom but to also tell the world that the US is not to be reckoned with and therefore that directly protects the freedom of the men, women, and children of the United States.  This generation did not just do what they were told to do.  So many brave individuals were inspired by the cowardly acts that took place on 9-11-2001 that they signed up in droves to serve their country and to protect their own.  A great friend of mine extended his hand yesterday to thank me for my service on this Memorial Day weekend and I thanked him and humbly told him, "I didn't do anything."  I think most vets feel that way, but at the same time I would like to think that the generation of vets after WWII still contributed to "fighting for our freedom."  God Bless America and Go Herd!

  • As we do every year, I took my 97 year old aunt to the cemetary to decorate her husband's grave with flowers and an American flag. Uncle Bob was a WWII bomber pilot and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal and Purple Heart.
