HUNTINGTON - For Marshall's Garrett Scott, the NFL dream with the Seattle Seahawks might have ended before it began.

The Seahawks waived Scott on Friday with the non-football illness designation, according to the team's news release.

Scott, who was chosen in the sixth round (No. 199 overall) by Seattle, was diagnosed by team doctors with a rare heart condition that was discovered during his physical prior to the start of rookie minicamp.

Details of the condition or its prognosis were not provided, but because of the condition Scott was unable to pass the physical and did not participate in the minicamp.

"After undergoing an extensive physical with our medical staff last week, Garrett's examination revealed a rare heart condition that will prevent him from any on-field participation in the near future," said John Schneider, Executive Vice President and General Manager for the Seahawks.

Scott's release came just one day after he signed a contract with the team. The Seahawks might have signed Scott despite knowing of his condition, according to reports.

Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times newspaper reported Friday evening that the team signed Scott knowing he had not passed his physical so he could receive some of the money associated with his four-year contract, which was signed Thursday.

ESPN's John Clayton reported Scott would get $318,000 plus his signing bonus for the 2014 season if he's on the non-football-related injured reserve list.

Schneider said that while the Seahawks released Scott, they are going to stand by him during the difficult time.

"We think highly of Garrett as a person and as a football player," Schneider said. "The team is committed to supporting Garrett in the months to come and will continue to help him determine his next steps."

Scott, a fixture on the Marshall offensive line for the last three years, was a second-team All-Conference USA selection in 2013.

His play at left tackle helped lead the offense to only its third 7,000-yard season in school history and its first 10-win season since 2002.

Scott appeared in 41 career games with the Herd, starting 35 of those contests.

Marshall athletic director Mike Hamrick was unavailable for comment.
