HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- After a season that included four Conference USA series wins (East Carolina, Tulane, Florida Atlantic, and Louisiana Tech), Marshall will send 15 players into summer league baseball action.

Catcher Matt Reed (Purcellville, Va.) and pitcher Matt Margaritonda (Freehold, N.J.) highlight the list, as both will play in the highly-respected Cape Cod League -- Reed with the Bourne Braves and Margaritonda with the Hyannis Harbor Hawks.

During their 2014 season with the Herd, Reed was selected to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List and Margaritonda was awarded Conference USA Pitcher of the Week honors for his complete game, 12-strikeout performance against East Carolina on March 9.

Corey Bird (Elkview, W.Va.), who was selected to the C-USA All-Freshman Team and College Sports Madness All-C-USA Second Team, will spend the summer playing with the former USSSA national champions, Ohio Warhawks. Bird was second in C-USA with 15 stolen bases, falling just one shy of the league leader.

The Herd will send four to the Great Lakes League this summer – left-handed pitchers Roscoe Blackburn (Worthington, Ohio), Sam Hunter (Ashland, Ky.), and Alex Thackston (Proctorville, Ohio), and utilityman Spencer Iacovone (Cincinnati). Blackburn will play for the Southern Ohio Copperheads, Hunter and Iacovone with the Hamilton Joes, and Thackston with the Lima Locos.

The Herd will also send four into the Prospect League. First baseman and power hitter TJ Diffenderfer (Mount Juliet, Tenn.) and right-handed pitcher Lance Elder (Miami) will spend time with the Chillicothe Paints, while pitchers Kolin Stanley (Beloit, Ohio) and Chase Boster (Stafford, Va.) will stay in the state and play with the Beckley-based West Virginia Miners.
Diffenderfer led the team in extra-base hits, putting up four home runs, three triples, and six doubles, to combat his team-high 29 RBI.

In addition, Marshall will also scatter four other players around the nation. Third baseman Aaron Bossi (St. Louis)  will play with the Hutchinson Monarchs of the Walter Johnson League, outfielders Robert Fajardo (Miami) and Brenden Wells (Beloit, Ohio) will participate on the Glen Falls Eagles of the Perfect Game League and Stark County Terriers of the Tri-State Collegiate League, respectively,  and lefty Caleb Ross (Barboursville, W.Va.) will join the Edenton Streamers of the Coastal Plains League.

Ross broke into the Herd record books this season as the MU leader in single-season pitching appearances with 36. During his 2014 campaign, the relief pitcher allowed just two runs in conference play, and pitched four perfect innings in his longest outing of his career on May 11 against Old Dominion.
