HUNTINGTON — It’s tough to guess how the 2013 season would have played out for Marshall had it not come back to win at Florida Atlantic.

The Thundering Herd had no idea at the time that it would lose a heartbreaker the next week at Middle Tennessee, but close losses to Ohio and Virginia Tech already had been posted. A loss at Boca Raton would have turned the Herd’s sluggish 4-3 start into a sputtering 3-4 start.

FAU, one of several Conference USA newcomers last year, was an unknown quantity — until the Owls’ D’Joun Smith intercepted Rakeem Cato on the game’s first scrimmage play.

With 10 minutes left in the game, the Owls led the Herd 23-14. It took a Gator Hoskins 41-yard TD reception and a last-play field goal by Justin Haig for the Herd to prevail.

  • Work cut out for how long?  ::) Lets recap this once again:

    FAU 3-4 overall
A total of 7 points scored between Nebraska & Alabama games resulting in two blow out losses- ok great teams.
Then they beat a crappy Tulsa team and scored 50 points. Tulsa is 1-6!
A loss to Wyoming who is 3-4 and they are not terrible (last minute FG by wyoming)
A BLOW OUT LOSS TO FIU only scoring 10 points a team Marshall destroyed in the 2nd half.
Finally a shoot out vs. WKU who apparently does not have a defense.

The only work in this one will be when the score is 0-0. Stop the running game and this one should be OVER by halftime playing at home in the Joan.

  • They have to sell papers some how. I think the players will be motivated to show last year was a fluke and will be "up" for a home game. Should the headline read this week "Nothing to See Here, FAU is Going to Get Crushed!" This is the first time in a a long while that the scribes have to manufacture some sense of doubt in the outcome.

  • last yr was just that..last yr. It was on the road rather than at home without D Johnson. Who knows the imp of players that they had then but don't now? We lost some too but it doesn't seem to have hurt much, huh? When Vegas says -27 and its at the Joan I never worry much.

  • Obviously the Gazette doesn't realize we are playing at home Saturday.  ::)

Doesn't matter where this game is played. My only concern here is whether we play our starters long enough to score 60 and become the #1 total and scoring offense this week.
