Marshall has best coach in place now

    Chuck Landon
    Daily Mail sportswriter

HUNTINGTON -- Is Marshall's spring practice an audition for Larry Kueck?
    I hope so.

    That's what it should be.

Marshall's spring drills, which began here today, should be an extended chance for the Thundering Herd's newly anointed interim head football coach to show if the "interim" part of his new title should be deleted.

  • If every school accepted Chuck Landon's rationale or logic, there would never be a coached hired, for any college football program other than assistants at the university where an opening occurs.

Of course an outside hire may cause a player or two to leave, the "systems (offense & defense) have to be changed, and new assistants hired, but gettting the best person possible far outweighs any short term gains that MAY  result from a status quo hire. MU should think about the long term advantages rather than a short term fix.

Larry Kieck may surface to be the best candidate, but we would never know without a national seartch. From what Marcum said (Gazette), the interest in Marshall is certainly there.

  • Agree 100% jst.  Kueck may well be the man for the job but there is no reason not to conduct a national search to either find someone better or confirm that there is no one better.

  • I like Landon but this article is absurd. The fact that Pruett put the program in a tight spot due to his choice to retire now is not a reason to name Larry Kueck or anyone else head coach without seeing what else is out there. I also don't know how any coach and prove he's up to the job of running a growing program by "auditioning" during spring practice. This job requires the hiring of a coach who can take this program by the reins and direct it where it needs to go - on and off the field. If that's Kueck, great. But there is no way to know that by watching him conduct spring ball.

As for naming a coach outside the program after Spring ball is over it's obviously not a perfect scenario but one that is manageable. The new coach can be told he has to maintain the existing staff for the 2005 season and then make his own judgments about who to keep and who to let go heading into 2006.

I think we've been put behind the 8 ball by the timing of Pruett's departure. We may have to be creative in how we approach that problem but I do not agree that we should be "stuck" with anyone because of it.

Bottom line for me: If Kueck is truly the guy to run this program then that will be apparent when he is compared straight up with other candidates. Let's get a proper seach going and if Kueck is the one left standing after an objective process then I'll be satisfied.

  • Great Post Wash, as I read all these post we could throw out hypotheticals (sp) all day. But I think at least have 10 things that seem to be weighing on me.

    1. Bob Pruett may very well be the best coach Marshall University has ever seen but the University must be committed to bringing in some one who match his drive and quality.

    2. Bob Pruett will forever be a part of Marshall Univeristy, for both his successes and his dedication to his school.

    3. I don't think a canidate exsist on Staff currently that will fill thought number one. We don't pay our assistants enough to have one.

    4. Although it's his right, since he's done so much for the program Bob sure did leave us in a hell of a pinch on this one. I can't think of worse time except perhaps during summer practice.

    5. Something more is involved with the situation that would bring out number 4 Health, Power Struggle, Funding, something has evoked this sudden departure.

    6. I have my doubts about how well the situation is going to play out with the admin in place.

    7. I think that some way that there is a behind the scenes, deal with Kueck and that this national search is just window dressing. It's to scripted, to media backed to of happend the way it did.

    8. Current Administration doesn't care about the program or fans, or else a national search wouldn't be window dressing.

    9. I think that eventually it will all come out why Bob's sudden departure happened.

    10. If Administration has turned down the football program from growing (i.e funding) there should be a riot to Farrell's house. Old school flames and pitch forks, rakes whatever you can get your hands because if a former WVU grad is taking down my football program by god it's going to evoke a little more than a phone call or email that will never be respected.

I guess we'll just have to sit around and see how it plays out.

    ==========================

What you fail to include in your Kueck calculation

    To:  chuck_landon@yahoo.com

Marshall's is a program that starves for money even had Pruett remained.

How much more so with a no-name, with no particular Marshall ties, whose biggest stage was Southern Miss, and who up until now, had only been considered head coach material by the likes of Stephen F. Austin?

Kueck may be, as you apparently claim an excellent coach who just hasn't risen above the radar yet. But you fail to realize that even excellent coaches need resources to succeed. Nothing personal, but you know this without me saying it -- Kueck inspires no one.

    =======================

Perhaps a little harsh, I admit, but the situation is what it is.

  • I believe if Landon could be totally honest with his rather's for head MU coach, it would be someone like Brian Knorr, or perhaps the U. of Buffalo head coach.

  • The coach at Buffalo isn't the problem. It's getting the recruits in that can play.

  • Coach K seems to have so far inspired his players. That is an important part of this equation. I say so far, because only time will tell of course.

  • You guys have top side points.

    Recruiting is very,very important.

Attitude of the players we recruit is very, very important.

These are time related tangibles, that we will not have the answer to, for sometime.

    GO THUNDERINGHERD!
