Topic: Kemper’s road to Marshall

After Matt Daniel took over as head coach of the University of Central Arkansas’ women’s basketball team, his daily conversations with Tony Kemper, which fluctuated between basketball and philosophical matters, convinced Daniel to name Kemper his assistant coach.
After two successful seasons together at Central Arkansas, Daniel accepted the position as the women’s basketball head coach at Marshall University.
Daniel soon brought along his Central Arkansas assistant to Marshall to complete the transition of his former staff.
As the 2015 season approaches, Kemper enters his fourth season with Daniel and the Herd.
“He shares our staff’s vision for this level of play and sees the potential in what Marshall can become on a national level in college basketball,” Daniel said to Herd Zone.
Before he accepted Daniel’s offer to join his coaching staff, Kemper said the two had a strong connection.

I never understood the rationale behind the view that women's sports - or Olympic sports, generally, are somehow less 'worthy' than men's b'ball and football.  Revenue is a part of that, I suppose, but "opportunity" should trump revenue every time.  Who cares that 14 of MU's 16 sports lose money (and, perhaps, 15 if men's basketball loses $ as I suspect)?  What does it matter if any particular team is nothing more than 'competitive'?  Surely, providing an education and the unique experience of being a D-1 athlete has some merit?

I firmly believe the worst decision in the history of Marshall athletics (other than the hiring of Bob Daniels as b'ball coach) was the decision to drop swimming.  That program never made money, to be sure, but it was FIVE straight Southern Conf. championships, and produced doctors, lawyers, successful businessmen, etc. that made our university proud (see, for instance, the new Pres. and COO of NetJets).  Its not all about winning, losing and cash flow.

WRONG! I am for womens sports fully, I have three daughters who played or continue to play sports. Lets be honest, other than mens basketball and football, womens b'ball takes up more of the budget than any other sport. We have had various degrees of success over the years. I hope Daniel succeeds, especially with the local kids he is bringing in. But womens b'ball likely has the worst ROI of any sport at Marshall. Its not a sexist thing at all. Its about pouring money into a sinkhole. Why we can't be successul, I don't know. Our facilities aren't that bad and its not like its been neglected.

You can pick up other sports - field hockey, lacrosse, bowling, etc.

I think Daniel is on the right track. We have multiple D1 girls bball players in the Huntington area.

I've heard that Marshall is already looking at 9th grader Dena Jarrells from Tolsia High School. This girl is getting a lot of looks from D1 schools already.

She is one of many in this area imo.

Was impressed that last year's team made a post season tournament. I watched on my computer and thought they were well coached.. Hope this is a great year.

This year's team has 8 freshmen coming in...
All have talent and can shoot the 3.  Only
missing piece to the puzzle is a "Big" for the
middle which they are working on for next year.

Hope the growing pains will be short and manageable.
