In his weekly press conference, the man called “Doc” dispensed a little medical advice to the assembled media.

“It has been brought to my attention that Devon Johnson has a fractured … disc,” said Marshall coach Doc Holliday. “There’s not such a thing as a fractured disc, by the way.”

He did not mention by name the writer who reported the injury, and criticized MU coaches for allowing Johnson to play early in the Thundering Herd’s win last Saturday at Kent State. But he quickly came to the defense of Johnson’s care.

“We’ve got the best team doctors going out there,” Holliday said. “I have great respect for Dr. G [Charles Giangarra], Dr. [John Jasko], our entire staff. I’ve got the best trainer going in Tim [Pike, head trainer]. And I can assure you those doctors and trainers always have our student-athletes’ health at the front of their deal, and we’ll never put a kid, be it Devon or anybody else, in a situation where they’re going to get hurt in a game.

“And our coaches respect those doctors, and that’s from the head coach on down. The doctors and the trainers make every decision that we make, as far as whether a player plays or not, not the coaches.”
