  • I don't remember that being part of the process... can we at least feel better that it might not completely be a Kayo decision?

That's not a rhetorical question, btw.

  • Actually, Kayo did have a screening committee.  Tubby Smith and company.

  • He also had ties going back to his days at Providence, when Marcum was at Umass.

  • Menis Ketchum and Tubby Smith are not the same kind of thing... I didn't mean so much "did he have advisors suggesting names to him," as we all know The Tubster did... I mean, did he have some other Marshall people helping in the evaluation of applicants?

I don't think that was the case. (???)

  • If Jirsa could get some decent recruits, and a couple of JUCO's we could posslibly have a decent team next year. i.e. if they have the talent, or he has the coaching ability, to begin, playing sound fundamental BB basics, or, don't even think this far; we could be really good, if we could have both.  It is not impossible!

  • There is a proper way to select a head coach and a stupid way to select a head coach.  Remember Florida ending up with Ron Zook?  The reason they ended up with him is that their search process consisted of floating someone's name in the media and seeing what his reaction would be.  I think having a screening committee is a good idea.  Whittle the names down to 10 or so and have those 10 come for an interview.  Find out how interested they are.  Find out how dedicated they are to Marshall or whether they think this is just a good job to have until they move on to bigger and better things.  Don't do the whole thing in public a/l/a Florida because there might just be someone who is interested but for whatever reason doesn't want his name splashed in the papers just now.  OTOH, don't do it completely in secret either.  When the screening committee gets it down to 3-5 names, announce who those 3-5 are so we as fans at least know who was being considered.

  • And, as they say, that wouldn't be the order, or anything like that would it.

  • chf,

Those are the names I've been told, with my take on the order. I am certain that there is alot of "buzz" about Doc Holiday, so that should tell you where he is in the pecking order..............

  • first off, no wvu scum as our head coach.  i can handle wvu guys as assistants but not running the show.

you don't want one that is going to retire????  come on, an old guy is probably our best chance at keeping him, even if it is 5-6 years.  any young gun (excluding MU connections maybe) who comes will be gone in 2-3 if we have good success (see urban meyer at BG and Utah) or we are mediocre and he stays a while.  it's that simple.

sometimes I think screw it, we're not making the committment anyway.  hire Kueck, he should be excited and add energy as it will be his first HC job...maybe he'll succeed and stay.

Flat, those are words on a page. Anyone could say that, and two months from now proclaim "told you so." If you're lookin for credibility you simply gotta do better than that.

  • Would appear to be Snyder and Kueck.

No search committee tells me Marcum pretty much has his mind made up. Which may not be a terrible thing except for names: Bruiser Flint, Greg White, Ron Jirsa (I know more time). And for those who weren't good enough: D'Antoni, McCarthy etc.  It isn't like the one man search committee idea has him headed for the AD's Hall Of Fame.  It doesn't appear to me that Marcum is taking this thing seriously at all.

Now all he has to do is convince us that he is sincerely considering anyone other than Kueck.  Once he's hired, Landon etc will make you believe that we couldn't afford the other candidates.  "Done deal" Chuck should just shut up IMO and report the news and not create it.

I hope I'm wrong, but much like the basketball search, I believe the dye (sp?) has been cast.

  • So, remind me... what exactly is a "screening committee" in Kayo's World? Does it even serve a purpose?
