  • In today's Chas Daily Mail.  Many may have not seen it, since it wasn't in the sports section.

  • Good article but I have to disagree with his last statement.
    Quote
Marshall football makes folks in these parts feel good. But there's no reason to believe football will bring about anything approaching an extreme makeover for Marshall, Huntington or West Virginia.

Anybody think that Marshall's campus would look anything like it does today if it weren't for the success of football?  Does anybody think enrollment numbers would be where they are if not for football?  Would there be a MU HOF Cafe if not for Herd football?

Otherwise, I totally agree with what he says.  One "little" thing that almost gets glanced over is almost freighening to me.

    Quote
Reynolds said Pruett met with frustration at every turn. He wanted an indoor practice facility, and that's not going to happen.

So it's not going to happen AT ALL?!

    Quote
The problem is that the faithful don't have the money to fund what they want. They believe the state should do it

Also have to disagree here.  It's not that the "faithful" don't have the money.  It's that some of them aren't willing to give it.  Plenty of Alumni in the 50 mile radius around Huntington that can more than afford at least $25 and don't.  I also don't think most fans think the state should pay for it.  I do think that most fans think that someone else will pick up their slack or that they just can't afford it (not realizing that you don't have to give thousands).  Just think if every Living Marshall alum gave $100. to the Big Green.  By the most recent count, there are about 75K alumni in the United States.  Of which 36K live in West Virginia.  If all alumni gave $100 to the Big Green, that's $7,500,000.  Seven and a half million dollars would go a heck of a long way to where we want to go.

  • I didn't know Dave was still writing . . . .  Aaaahhhh, so much porn; so little time.   :o

Actually, he makes some valid points, but I was told by a friend in the BG office that the IPF WILL happen in the very near future.

  • I really don't understand the move to Conference USA if our administration was not going to head the movement for better facilities that would ultimately make us more competitive on the field.  I'm afraid to say it, but I have a feeling that we are headed for a stagnation period that is going to be very difficult to fight our way out of.  We have spent a lot of time debating who the next coach should be under the assumption that we would be able to attract a top candidate.  Once a solid coach sees our financial situation and our inability to get things done from a facilities standpoint, he is going to go away laughing.  There has to be a plan out there that will allow us to build a reasonable practice facility that won't break the bank.  I think it is safe to say that we are moving up in competition by entering this conference. The other members of Conference USA aren't going to stand still waiting for us to get things built.
I am so frustrated right now.  What else can we do?

I guess it all depends on your definition of "near future."

I remember George Burns telling a joke one time.

Guy goes to heaven and asks 'God, what is the value of a million dollars to you?'

God replies ' no more than a penny.'

The man then asks, 'God what is the value of a million years represent to you?'

God says ' time is endless for me so it is no different than a mere second.'

The man thinks about this for a moment.  After a little silence, the man asks

'God, could you give me a penny?'

God says 'Sure.  Give me just a second.'

  • Yes, Lydia.... in a match few would believe, liberal Dave Peyton is writing for the very conservative Chas Daily Mail.  A real head-scratcher.

And yes, BGThunder, that same glossed-over "not going to happen" remark stood out like a sore thumb to me, too.

  • I'm going to have to call Bobby out on this one: Bowling Green has lousy facilities, yet they continue to win and recruit great players. Our facilities are better than BG's, yet they kicked the living f*ck out of us this year. They had superior talent, and superior coaching. As much as I love Bobby, he has to take a big part of the blame for this turn of events............

No doubt we need and IPF, but we are going to have to commit hard-core to fund-raising. There is enough money in the region and among the alumni to get some of these projects done, we just need the right salesmen making the pitch.............

  • I don't think Coach P has ever NOT taken part of the blame.  He has merely stated the fact that an IPF would make it easier to:

    a)  recruit better players
    b)  build better players (by being able to hold practices in the rain/cold)

Then, when you add the fact he told the Chas QB Club on several occasions the funding for the IPF was already in place (funds from legislature combined with private donations HE had secured) and building was to begin this spring.... well, you can see the frustrations beginning to mount.

In fact, he told the Club the renovations to the Shewey Bldg were to begin soon after last season ended, and it was to be near completion as spring ball was ending and would leapfrog into the construction of the IPF (which would also coincide with the laying of the new turf).

Thus far?  No construction on the Shewey Bldg, no construction on the IPF.

  • We need a total re-education of the entire atheletic department.  There are all sort's of programs that I have seen mentioned on these boards that are very good pro-active ideas floating around the entire University.  Someone, needs to be a leader, and begin a proactive campaign to dedicate everyone to a higher level, for the entire University.  We need your support in these tough times. One dollar per day, would make a person a big dog in the program.  .40+ cents per day will make you a part of an everlasting dream come true, and you will always know how much you are appreciated.

Kevin Kelly told me FOUR YEARS AGO that the funds were already in place to expand the Shewey facility.  I would love to know where they went.  :-?

Are they even going to lay new turf this spring. Is this maybe 1 of the reasons Pruett left, had he heard they pushed it back 1 more year. Only to be pushed back 1 more year.

Please remeber this, before everyone goes off on the facilities deep end......while MU needs to continue to reinvest in facilities, Marshall enters CUSA with the second best (to UTEP) overall facilities when considering only football and basketball...........MU overall FB facilities are better or at least equal to So. Miss, ECU, UAB, UCF, Tulane, Rice, Tulsa, SMU, Memphis, etc...............and in basketball, they come out ahead of everyone in on-campus facilities (arena) except UTEP and perhaps Tulsa.......although I'd rate the Cam and Tulsa's facility as a push.  So. Miss, Houston, and UAB all have comparable facilities but none are better.

Again, while MU needs to reinvest in facilities, it's not time to panic

  • I would say it is pretty damn close to panic attack if things are not done soon. When I mean soon I mean like 2 years. This program could be right down the toilet in 2 years.  To more losing seasons and we could be back to being the doormat of the state and boy would the WVU fans just love that.  After telling them we are growing and how scared they were they have got to be loving hear us struggle as of lately.  Especially when we told them their coach was going to leave as we laughed.  I am just really worried about our program and the school in general.  :???:
