HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A gun range in West Huntington is being considered by city officials.

City Council on Monday night heard first reading of an ordinance regarding the nearly $3 million project. The gun range would be located in Commerce Park, just south of Madison Avenue.

  • That would be great for Huntington. Hopefully it's an indoor range or combination of both.

The gun range would be indoor with 10 shooting lanes and a pro shop with guns available for purchase. The indoor range would offer gun safety classes for men and women.

Bill Rosenberger, the councilman in that district, said it would be an economic boost to the area.

"When you start bringing in thousands of people to West Huntington, you're going to need a hotel," Rosenberger said. "You're going to see more restaurants. You're going to see more shops, so I think this becomes a catalyst for other successful ventures in West Huntington."

Still, some people WSAZ spoke with said they are concerned about possible safety issues.

  • Sorry Bop, I should have opened your link. I know this would be great for the area. I have family and friends that have wished for this for years. We have 6 here in the Dayton area with a 7th (Point Blank) being built now. It certainly shows the popularity and demand for them. With so many gun owners and hunters back in WV and Huntington area I'm surprised there aren't more already.

On a side note my wife surprised me with a Christmas present for a year's unlimited membership to the range (SIM Trainer) where we got our CC certification. The guy that trained and certified us is part owner of SIM Trainer (Mark Avery) and also has a weekly radio show that you can stream live or listen to podcasts called "Shooting From The Hip". I put links below if you or anyone else is interested.

According to a PowerPoint Presentation provided to Rosenberger by Shane Conn, owner of High Noon, the facility is estimated to create 11 to 15 full-time and up to 20 part-time jobs. It will have ten 25-yard pistol and rifle lanes, a 3,000-square-foot retail showroom for firearms, ammunition, clothing, apparel and safety equipment, a full line of educational classes geared toward safety, self-defense, women-only classes, survival, homesteading and responsible citizenry, a large members' lounge and conference room, and customizable classroom space.

Here's some more info on what this new facility will offer.

It's an exciting prospect for the West end.  It will draw people from miles around.

  • This is excellent news and it needs to happen.

Also need to get some skeet facilities set up around the Beech Fork area.

  • Update:

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- An ordinance to help pave the way for Huntington's first indoor gun range was unanimously approved Monday night by Huntington City Council.

The overwhelming support came for what council members claim will be a boost to the the city's economy.

If approved, the range will create 11 to 15 jobs.

The ordinance passed Monday makes it legal to discharge a weapon at an indoor gun range.

Mayor Steve Williams said he's anxious to see the impact the gun range will have.

"I'm looking forward to having the gun range built in Huntington," Williams said. "That will certainly be a draw to individuals. There is no such no thing in this region."

There are still some hoops to jump through before the gun range gets the green light.

However, the developer Shane Conn says, if all goes according the plan, the range could be up and running by the end of this year.

  • Hope you can get memberships when it opens.  Sign me up.  Instead of a Herd Fans golf outing we can have a range outing.

  • Update: Indoor gun range proposal receives West End's welcome

    Quote
Although Conn was prepared to address any opposition to an indoor gun range, possible sound or safety issues, the approximately 30 community members in attendance seemed to approve of Conn's proposal.

To be known as High Noon, the indoor range will include at least 10 75-foot firing lanes, a proshop with around $500,000 worth of guns for sale, a classroom, and a member's lounge. Conn said the range would be the only facility in West Virginia to accommodate high-powered rifles, and caliber size would not be limited. Guns, including fully-automatic weapons, would be able to be rented.

HUNTINGTON - In just over a month, a proposal for an indoor shooting range in Huntington's West End has received approval of city officials.

Monday night Huntington City Council unanimously approved the final three ordinances that paved the way for the proposed $3 million range.

  • I work with the owner of this range, Shane.  He is an awesome person.  I have seen his blueprints, it's going to be nice...This range is going to be state of the art, with everything brand spanking new....He told me that he is thinking of setting up a 3D archery range on the same property...

Please do him a favor and show your support like the range's facebook page and you will get updates, membership info and other important info...Thank you
