  • Yep...really sad to hear.  Very unique musician/singer.

Had some terrific songs...too many to list but "American Girl"  certainly one of my favorites.

  • I didn't know Tom Petty and his music, but any musician that passes on leaves a lot of people in mourning. Musicians are a very "unique special breed of people".

  • A lot of people don't know this, but Tom Petty had a considerable part in the move "Waterworld" ( 1995 ) a.k.a "Fishtar", etc. but still a popular cult film.

Anyway his scenes were all deleted in copies that came out after the first releases on VHS, not sure what happened, have not seen an in-depth article. But the movie is way too long to begin with and TP didn't really add much to the film as I recall.

Salient point being how unhealthy TP looked in that film. There is a 1980 concert film in which he looks really young. What happened in 15 years. Some people burn the candle at both ends and I guess TP smoked cigarettes. Anyway, he completed his last big Tour, which I guess takes a lot out of most performers. Sad to see him gone, and only 2 years older than me sheesh.

  • I remember seeing an interview years ago about how he loved smoking marijuana , glad it wasn't addictive and couldn't live without it . I thought at the time , uh , what ? I believe his weed and the partying is responsible for his rapid unhealthy appearance .

  • The dude never looked healthy to me but that doesn't mean anything per se.  There are plenty of rockers that look like zombies but are still kicking it.

  • Tom Petty put out some good tunes.  Many of his hit songs were very different from each other.  Definitely a very creative musician.  RIP TP.
