  • The only thing I ask is look at offense a bit differently. Sometimes (often times) the pretty spread that slings the pig skin all over has an off night. By that I mean Washington State. Again I love Leach but it is physically impossible to play that system week in and week out and win it all. Leach has not, Holgorsen has not, Briles did not. They do however let teams who may be a bit less in talented win things they shouldn’t. But one off game and poof.

You have to run the football. This team week in and week out has ran the football. We have 2 RS Fr Ts and a RS So starting. A home run isn’t expected every time. Hit two a game and boom. All Litton has to do is not throw picks. Chase has thrown 3 this year. Should pace for his normal 23 and 9. The first half the quick outs is harmful. We have to sustain drives. Paint drying offense can win championships with the D and a game managing QB. We don’t need to score 49 a game. 21-28 points will win. With that said you can’t turn the ball over in adventageous situations and need to let the D rest. Enjoy the defense you’re watching and continue to enjoy the Herd winning. 5-1 is a lot better than last year with losses to UNCC and ODU.. I’ll take that all day. Next year, could be another story.

  • I'm happy to be 5-1 as well and it's especially nice after last season. It's a good start to building back to where we want to be. However, I do have an issue with people acting as if WE ARE BACK and that this team doesn't have it's warts.

I do believe we have a championship level defense in fact we haven't had an opposing QB register higher than an 18.6 QBR by ESPN's metrics since NC State. No team has rushed for more than 150 yards or so against us and we have allowed 3 first half points in our last 4 games and only 27 total in those ball games.

My concern is this. We haven't beaten a good team yet. Now CUSA doesn't have many good teams but the back end of the schedule is a lot tougher than the front end, with dangerous road trips to Middle, FAU and UTSA on the docket to go along with a home hostings of WKU and USM. I am worried that if the offense can not start to finish more consistently that it is going to cost us a game or two down the stretch because as good as our defense is it will not be fair, reasonable or honestly realistic to ask them to do to some of those offenses what they have to the Kents, Charlottes and ODUs. If the offense doesn't sort some things out and they all are just small miscues that can be corrected than we will not be playing for a CUSA title this season.

We have improved over last year especially in attitude and effort but the offense has to take it's next step forward if we want to get back to playing for titles in 2017. And that's not whining, that's not hating, that's just the truth.

  • Herdalum83 finishing is a good point. Last week we finish 2-3 of those drives I think there’s a different board attitude in some ways. This week the team finished, but just didn’t get down the field enough to finish more consistently

Definitely, and I'd add the slow starts to be a point of emphasis going forward. That won't get it done against the back half of this schedule. FIU surprised Tulane and UAB downed Empty Sue tonight too.

  • IMO, the Herd's D has played much better so far this year.  Ditto for the Special Teams.  O still sputters at times.  One worry is that our opponents thus far, except for NC State, have been BAD to HORRENDOUS!!  Sorry, but that's a fact.  ODU is now 2-4, with wins over FCS Albany and perennial whipping boy UMASS.

So as happy as we SHOULD be at 5-1, how do we correctly gage such a record?  One concern I have is that we still have more formidable conference foes ahead of us.  Believe offense has to start quicker and become more consistent as we proceed through next six games.  Do think Litton's overall play, despite too many errant passes at times, is head and shoulders above his 2016 performance.  We have a stable of 3 dependable running backs; just hope offensive coaches utilize them to the best extent.  Litton and receiving corps seem to be developing more cohesion and familiarity.  No one should be displeased with our O line, especially we all the youth we are utilizing.  Props belong to Coach Mirabol primarily for that fact, IMO.

Now as for next 6 games, appears that MTSU is having problems.  We've given away 2 games down at Murfreesboro and are due for a W there.  Seems this team has played well on the road thus far, even down in Raleigh.  Win at MTSU can be obtained, if we play like we did against ODU in the second half.

After that, both FIU and FAU are arguably better under their new "Name" coaches.  One of the Panthers 2 losses was against unbeaten UCF and they beat a decent AAC team, Tulane, Saturday.  2 of FAU's 3 losses have been against top 25 teams:  Wisconsin and Navy.    Road games in Texas are NEVER EASY for the Herd and UTSA presents a formidable challenge down in the Alamo Dome; win against winless Baylor not as shinny now, but still a win over a Big 12 program.  Good news about last 2 opponents, WKU and Southern Miss, is that the games are at the Joan.  Both have been some of our most heated rivalries since joining CUSA.  Recent problems with the Toppers need no rehash here.  And the Eagles always seem to have very athletic teams.  IMO, if we are to duplicate, or better, our first half W-L record, we will need in some of these games more productive and efficient offense with continued high level play from our D and special teams.

That is all- - -Go Herd!!
