  • I just listened to Danny's interview with Lance Medow on Maddog radio. Danny said Adjin realized he made a mistake and would like to come back. Marshall is checking in on the new NCAA rule to see if they can carry 14 scholarship players or not in situations like this.

He is a professional player. In fact he was invited and did attend the G League combo yesterday in Chicago.

    Lol! Yep

Such a shame he signed with an agent, and really makes me sad. We will be great anyway, but our 3 guards with Williams and Penava starting would be lethal..............oh well.

    Go Herd!

  • I’m afraid some will interpret the following comments as anti-Penava. That isn’t my intent.

Let’s face it the NCAA doesn’t have a history of doing Marshall any favors, and I don’t think they are going to start now. Penava decided to go and he is gone. It was a bad decision on his part, he’s probably made bad decisions in the past, and he’s going to make more; it’s part of life. In the short run MU is going to pay for it. We will most likely lose a couple of early season games that we would have won with Penava in the lineup. In the intermediate term I believe DD will have made the adjustments and developed the new talent by March so that we’ll do about as well without Penava as we would have with him. Next year we’ll have a better team than we would have had had Penava stuck around due to having one more experienced player on the roster.

As for Penava, he made a mistake, however he has a bright future as a professional player at some level. Work as hard as he did last year and things will work out. I wish him luck.

I spoke with his mom yesterday. He had just concluded his workout with G League reps. The league had invited in some players and he was one.
She said he should know in a week or so his status.
I saw video of a couple trademark blocks.
If it doesn't work out, he will go back to his original plan and work out the next few months in Santa Barbara

I wish him all the best, but he made a huge mistake. I am convinced we were a sleeper Final Four team if he stayed at Marshall. Without him we can still be great, but we will have to gel and likely take some early season lumps.

    Go Herd!

  • I thought back in the spring when he was mulling over leaving MU that someone had posted that his parents, perhaps his Mom, were encouraging him to leave.  Apparently idea was that if he didn't make the League, he could be back in Europe close to home, and family, and play professionally there for at least a year.

Guess if he doesn't come back to MU, and can make the D-League and stay in the US and play this winter, it would be better for his chances to make the League down the road.  I'm sure he'll be playing ball somewhere this coming season.

  • He CANNOT come back. He has ALREADY been paid. He no longer has amateur status.

  • My half-brother played professional tennis during the summer while he was #1 singles for WFU for 3 seasons. He told me that he had to give the money that he won back less expenses to keep his amateur status.

The rules regarding Penava were clear. He signed with an agent. I think the new rules are only retro to August 1 of this year. I don't think he has the option to give the money back and is a professional now.

The sad thing is I posted last year how special this BBall season was going to be ... and why anyone would want to leave if they had the chance to be a part of it.

I want to believe, like one poster had it, that we would have been a Top-10 team with Penava, and maybe like posted above a sleeper for the Final Four or Elite 8. But I have no way of judging how valid those dreams may or may not have been. I think a lot would play into it - coaching, officiating, player development time, mental toughness and maybe most of all the "Luck" of the draw in the NCAA tournament, etc.

But everything points to that ship having sailed.

Dan on the radio.  Mostly NBA stuff, but at the end he talks about the possibility of Penava coming back.  I am sure we will learn more at practice when they get back.

I'm praying Penava get to come back. If any college deserves a break, it's the Thundering Herd.

Yep. Not to mention it wasn’t effective at the time of the draft this year... and player’s have to basically immediately decide to come back to school under the new rules...., etc., etc., etc.

Really surprised Danny is out there making these comments....

Shouldn't DD know if Penava, might have a chance of coming back? I'm sure DD just didn't say that off the top of his head.

You'd think he should know but it sure seems like he doesn't.

  • Start listening to the interview around 28:00 minute mark. I think Penava comments are made around 29:00-30:00 mark somewhere in there.

  • If he is still striving to be in a paid league, I think that says a lot about his true interests in ever returning to MU.  Truly time to move on concerning Adjin IMHO.  Very good guy, good player for MU, wish him the best and hope he sends some contributions back to MU in the future...

  • It is a new rule.  I don't think anyone really know how this new rule will play out.  The NCAA would have to make some type of exception if Penava would be able to come back.  At the vary least DD is trying to lobby for Penava's return.  Like Dan says the NCAA should manage these rules for the best interest of the kids.  You have a young man in Penava who could really benefit by having another year of College.  He made a mistake and would like to come back according to DD.   Will the NCAA make an exception?  Probably not, but this is DD's argument.  We will have to know something pretty soon.  This is a long shot at best, but at least DD is trying....

  • Here are the three big deadlines players who are declaring for the draft will need to consider:

Players must declare for the draft by April 22 to be considered
The NBA Draft Combine runs from May 16-20 in Chicago
Players must withdraw from the draft by May 30 to remain eligible for college play
The 2018 NBA Draft is on June 21
