  • Looks like Green and Morrell both had a better day passing than AT during the scrimmage Saturday.

Green 15 of 21 for 198 yards with 1 TD

Morrell 6 of 9 for 78 yards and 1 Int

AT 4 of 14 for 44 yards and 1 Int

Based on that one scrimmage Green looks like he is in a good position to win the starting job vs. the Red Hawks.  Solid performance by Green.

Also looks like AT is getting a fair chance to win the starting job based on passing attempts.  He had the second most and would have probably gotten more had he performed better.

It looks like Morrell is still in the mix but behind Green.  I can see the coaches giving AT more snaps than Morrell just to get a better picture of AT at this point.  Morrell participated in spring drills so they should have a good evaluation of Morrell.  It would have been great to see all 3 QBs with good numbers.  I don't really care which QB wins the starting job so long as that QB gives the Herd the best chance of winning.  Based on that one practice it looks like the starter is Green with Morrell second.

The article says the scrimmage was designed to simulate game situations.

  • Whoever the best guy is I'm cool with it...although I will say this is one "practice". AT has beaten out Green in almost every other practice to varying degrees.

But I'm cool with whoever they pick...I just know with a QB who has never played a snap there are going to be mistakes...interceptions, etc...and some of those may end up losing games for us.

Regardless of overall team talent...if you have a QB who has never taken a snap at the college level...you are pretty much in a "rebuilding year"...and I hate those two words.

Funny, every report I read says Green has been doing well with the ones. This past Saturday was the first time Thomson has been in full pads and 11v11. Previously most were short passing drills.

But yeah, I don’t care who it is as long as we win.

How in the world can you say this when AT hasn't even participated in the majority of practice? Does he hand the ball off that much better than Green? lol

  • I've been to the majority of practices and when AT did throw it was 10 yards or less until late camp when he started throwing a bit better with the occasional long pass but was rare to see, Green and Morrell was the qb battle this summer I wouldn't even factor AT in it.

Because when he has thrown, which has been some each week...he has completed more passes and has less interceptions...and has been said to have looked overall the best (good velocity on balls....very accurate) when compared to Green. There are like 7-10 reports with him coming out on top. This past scrimmage seems to be the first time Green has beaten out AT head to head.

Again, I just say play the best guy. If the best guy is Green, I'm cool with that. If the best guy is a 70% AT, who can only practice twice a week...I'm cool with that...because I want the best guy in there who gives us the best chance of winning FROM THE GET GO.

New QB's have growing pains... if Green has some growing pains we could EASILY be 2-6 our first 8 games.

I haven't been to any of the practices but that is contrary to what many of the reports say. If I had time I would pull them all up. Maybe the reports are wrong...that wouldn't be anything new.

  • Green has easily been the best QB since camp opened and I have read every practice report available on the net and in the paper. AT has mostly not even participated.

This is exactly what I have been told as well. I'm not sure how people are drooling all over AT.....shoot, I can throw it 10 yards.

  • The team around you and the schemes give you the best chance to win as a young QB....so that you aren't forced to do more than you are capable of. Morrell is the only one who has taken a snap vs D1 competition vs a Louisville team ranked in top 10 and a very good WKY team and he did with a lack of scheme and lack of talent to a degree....so you can't judge him either.

I am more comfortable that Cramsey can put whoever is in there in better position to succeed than BL AND we have lots of talent on both sides of the ball.  I would like nothing better than if we were able to use our experienced OL and run the ball down Miami, OH throat all day and our QB throws 10 passes.  One big concern will be how the QB performs in the redzone.  With new kickers we need to be able to get into the endzone…..and having a guy with wheels like Green puts more pressure on the D.  I think Cramsey will help in redzone playcalling too.

From most accounts Green has earned the starting nod and will be taking most of the 1st team reps in prep for Miami....which starts today. Minus an injury, the QB competition is over until at least Sept 2.

Morrell is not a good QB. Once again, if he is in a battle with any #1, that team doesn't have a good QB. Its that simple.

The guess is it’s a “battle” because they didn’t want Morrell to leave at spring. It’s always been whether announced or not Green vs AT.

Agreed, but I don't think its a true battle per say. Green has been taking all the #1 reps for a while and Morrell has been taking most of the #2 reps for a while now.

  • Morrell has been taking most of the twos due to Thomsons injury.  It was rumored that Thomson was hurt before the Summer started.  Comes to find out he was.

  • based on Doc's comments in todays paper it's worrisome to me that at this late date ..one guy is not gonna get all the snaps vs the #1 D. Minus the returns the O scored seventeen last yr vs their D that has a bunch of guys back. I get it that both bring a lot to the table but still dont like it.

  • It's obvious Doc wants Thomson for some reason. Despite numbers, time with the ones, that Green should be the man. Just name Thomson the starter and end this fiasco. HD says it may be a game time decision.  A game time starter will not win us the Miami game. Let someone get used to the OL and start developing some continuity. jmo.

Doc has contradicted himself of this issue.  He said, he wanted one of the QBs to separate themselves during camp.  If everything I've read from multiple sources is true, Green has done that.  Given his willingness to draw this process out further, it says to me that he wants to give AT every opportunity to win the job which could indicate that there may have been a promise of playing time during the recruitment process.  But that's just my opinion.

I think this is simply wanting to make sure they have time to evaluate AT.  Difficult to do when you aren't playing.  He is now.

  • wondered about that...Green more of a ground threat and AT pass so Miami(not the real one) has to work two diff Ds. Its poss. Also true AT didnt get the same chances as Green because not healthy. Harder for Doc to evaluate and harder for AT to be ready.
