  • After reading a lot of Grant Taylor articles in the Herald-Dispatch, I checked out the Charleston Gazette, lo and behold, I seen the same articles that are in the Huntington paper. I miss having two columnists and I really miss Doug Smock articles. I guess we're stuck with one writer for now.

  • He should start a blog if he still has a passion for writing about Marshall. Or write for one of the Herd message board sites.

I miss Doug as well. He does have a twitter account. I'm sure he'll be posting about Marshall football this season.

I think Doug is a lot younger than Chuck? Maybe Doug will be back after Chuck retires?

  • That's great news about Christian Brand (from Doug's Twitter).  Does anyone know where Doug is working now?  I agree, he is missed in daily print journalism.

  • Agree, E, and other commenters.  I hope Doug has found/will find some good employment.

Also, I had noted before that the Gazette was just reprinting Traylor's articles from the H-D.  IMO, if you're a Herd fans in the Charleston-Huntington Metro area, there's no point buying both papers, because the coverage of MU sports has essentially "halved" in those papers since he was let go.

If Reynolds is smart, and that's a Big "if", he would replace Chuckie in the H-D at the first opportunity with Doug.  Would be a significant upgrade.  Got to think that Landon is near full retirement age, 65 or so.

He graduated South Charleston High in 1969. Most of us are in the 66 to 68 age range.

  • Doug is the man! I miss his articles and dry sense of humor that was present in them. I'll never forget when he mentioned a player taking a drug test but forgetting to study beforehand.

The day Doug messaged me to tell me he was being let go is the day I called and canceled my on line subscription of the Charleston paper.

He was working with his wife in her web design business that last I talked to him.

  • No knock against Grant or anyone else but I miss Smock's writing.

Smock had a lot of history and based some articles on stats.  Seems like some of the articles lately from all news sources have lacked real substance.  Give me some substance.
