No more RPI for college basketball. Replaced with new machine learning predictive system called NET. Will this help, hurt or keep things the same for mid majors?

I honestly do not see how this is going to be good for the college game... Teams will be running up the scores anytime they get. 

According to the NCAA, the NET will rely on:

Game results
Strength of schedule
Game location
Scoring margin
Net offensive and defensive efficiency,
Quality of wins and losses

As for scoring margin, it now matters -- to a certain point. The NET puts a cap on margin of victory/defeat at 10 points "to prevent rankings from encouraging unsportsmanlike play, such as needlessly running up the score in a game where the outcome was certain."

Running up scores will be more a function of a-hole coaches than trying to game the ranking.

You can bet your last dollar it will favor P5 schools and hurt G5 schools. The NCAA is all about money. P5 schools bring in the eyeballs and that makes tha cash register ring. Oh, they will play up a mid major during the tournament....but they really want the name schools.

Well the committee has always ignored even the mid-majors with fantastic RPI's so I'm sure they'll find a way to ignore the mid-majors who rank highly by this metric.

That ship has sailed. When the P5 schools asked for and received auronomy, the mid-majors basically kept the right to call themseves Division I in name only. P5 schools got the bowls they wanted, the lion's share of TV money and they basically run the NCAA basketball tournament.

The G5 would be better off breaking away and making decisions that are important to them.

You sir would be correct... I was glancing over it while on a conference call yesterday and didn't read the entire article... I stand corrected.

I read that the scoring margin will max out points at a certain lever to avoid running up scores.

Would that be anything like betting one's "bottom dollar" ? Aussie Paul Kelly's band had an old song about this in the 80's and the lyrics were, uh, maybe a bit sordid.  :-[

So all the quadrant one stuff was just for last season? Is all of that out the window now?

The ONLY way this helps us is if they use this season to fine tune it and then drop the committee completely.  Take the gd P5 bias out of the system other than what's surely programmed into the algorithm.

The new schedule format should still help us. You always want to play the best teams and that is what the quads does.
