It was more of a beer and pretzels approach when I was around. Although none of us drink. Pandemic is another cool game we liked.
Now that I have retired to Panama and my so-called friends won't let me skype in anymore, they are on to 2-player strategy war games like Hitler's War, etc. I liked the tactical board games such as Armor, Panzer, and '88' back in the 80's.
