  • MU is basically playing the game for free since any amount is deducted from insurance policy from SC game. We get a promise of a future 2-1 football series.  Doesn't sound like a great deal to me unless they lose vs UVA in which case MU would get $100,000 and the football series promise.  I would have held out for a home basketball game....but that's just me.

No.  We’re letting the insurance company pay for Virginia Tech’s 1 off fee.  I return for cutting them a break, we get a home game with the Hokies.

    It’s a fantastic win win.

Actually, if the game is NOT played, it will be a home and home. If it is played it will amount to a 2-1.
I agree on holding out for basketball but basketball is not on Mike's agenda, sadly.
He lets O'Malley do hoops schedules and that way it is out of his mind.

  • Great deal. Very happy with it. This is a great game for us and them. No kids have to miss school, no planes to get on, good attendance from both sides and both places. Great for Huntington.

Also have heard that the Hokies were not happy that ECU jumped at another game. They have a lot of home and homes left with them.

  • Great deal and a win win! I am afraid that VT might not win against UVA. Tech has lost the last four games by double digits and UVA has won four of the last six games. The game will be in Blacksburg and that will help Tech.

Either way, it is a great deal for The Herd.

Agreed. No game Dec 1 but a home and home later

If Tech loses to U.Va. on Friday, there won't be a Dec. 1 contest, but the Hokies will still pay Marshall $100,000 and play the future home-and-home, the source confirmed.

  • MH, rewriting "The Art of the Deal"; great job Mike.

Not sure why Basketball would have even been considered, got what was on the table.  This was a football consideration for VaTech, and both schools come away with a grand result from the discussions.

  • I guess I didn't realize that the potential game Dec 1 is part of the 2 for 1.  I was thinking it would be a 2-1 afterwards..effectively making it a 3-1. Sounds like after Dec 1 it is a 1-1 whether the game is played or not.  Is that correct?

Teams like this in the Joan equals butts in seats and much needed excitement.

I also hope the game is played this year.

  • Exactly!!!!

I would bet that the policy requires that the beneficiary accept a reasonable substitute game if one becomes available.

  • We help out VA Tech for the Dec 1 game and we are just replacing our original road game at SC. Then we get a one for one with VA Tech. Winner Winner, chicken dinner. Great chance for a sold out game at the Joan or a big gate and very good for  the  Huntington economy. This is a sweet deal!

MUonium, the above info is incomplete and in a couple of years, inaccurate, according to www.fbsschedules.com

In 2021, Tech is at WVU, and plays Richmond, MTSU and Notre Dame at home.  (The Michigan series was scrapped some time back).

In 2022, Tech plays at ODU and Liberty; home to ECU and WVU (no game with Penn State).

Same site indicates Tech has filled ALL 4 OOC games for years 2023 through 2030.

Of course, many of these future games are not "set in stone".  Tech will no doubt shuffle some of these games as the need arises based on fluid circumstances among all parties.  Thus a home and home series could come about sooner rather than later.  Good news for a lot of us "long in the tooth" types!!
