  • How does that change the season?

Currently 8-3, 2nd in the east with one win over a team with a winning record.

A win Saturday and we finish 9-3, second in the East, and one win over a team with a winning record.

I know it’s VT, but it’s not the VT we all know from the Beamer days.

  • It could help in bowl placement. Mostly just a win over a P5.

I would consider a VERY successful season at 9-3 & bowl bid. We do not get to select the conference we are in. We had a QB transition this year and shaky to start for number of reasons. We lost a very good DC and our defense played lights out top performance all year. Slight glitch with special teams early in year but got that fixed. We overcame a significant number of injuries at RB, and other positions.

Most teams would trade 9-3 with win on the road at FIU very successful.

I doubt many others buy into my post, but all things considered beats two years ago disaster.

  • And a VA Tech team that before several KEY injuries and squad defections, got embarrassed by a bad OLD Dominion team that the Herd thoroughly whipped (BOTH games were at ODU)!!

Of course, all of which means little or nothing when it comes to Saturday's game!!!!

CUSA has a given number of bowls. It matter not the team record. ESPN and CUSA will put teams where they believe it makes most sense to THEM.

Another reason a bowl doesn’t mean what it used to mean. Way to many bowls. CUSA should have 2 maybe 3. 3 is a stretch. Remember when the goal was to win the CUSA and play in the liberty bowl against the SEC? Now it’s just get to 6 and pray you don’t end up in Hawaii or the Bahamas. A prime reason espn has ruined college ball. They own a lot of these bowls and “place” teams based on who knows what criteria.

And yes a win against VT on their field matters. Regardless what their record is. It’s tech. They have history and tradition that still matters.

correct. Bowl games for G5 schools are now just participation trophies. Other than maybe a December vacation in a warm weather site, they are pretty much worthless. I know that if I go this year, that is the reason I will go. A few days in Boca a week before Christmas would be fine.

  • Bowls not what they used to be but still give the school/team/program rare national TV exposure usually against a decent opponent. As far as going, I don't have much interest when costs etc are considered.

Not so sure about the national exposure. Viewership on some of them is VERY bad. Just how much interest will there be in a game in New Orleans on Dec 15 between North Texas and maybe Georgia Southern? If you lived anywhere outside their areas, would you watch?

  • I'd consider it a successful season if we beat Va Tech and win the bowl. 10-3 would be a good record. The Va Tech name still carries weight and would be looked at as a solid win for us. Yes, it's disappointing not to win the league again and the QB play has been a hot mess but I can't get too salty with a 9-3 and possible 10-3 record.

If we lose to the Hokies and win the bowl game for a 9-4 that's a B- in my book. Lose both and the natives get restless, me included.

What's up with you people and "I need to go to a warm location" crap? It's not like your living in Unalaska. This is a common theme I hear from "Fans". If you feel the need to be in a WARM location, simply go. Hitch-up your mobile home and head south.

That's cause when you want to go to Florida to be warm and play a MAC or SB team. No one gives a $hit.

  • If we lose, it will be considered an indictment against our program. If we win, it will be poo=pooed because they were just a team with a losing record and not that good anyway. There's not a lot of pleasing folks on this board right now.

Personally, I can't wait. Probably the last time I'll get to see Ryan Bee, Chase Hancock, Brady, etc. in person.

  • I was attending games when we had the longest losing streak in the nation and I never saw this much angst back then.  The grass is always greener on the other side of the hill.

Well, We Are Still... Marshall. It's go to the bowl game in warm Florida and watch us play a MAC or SB team. No one gives a $hit....

    or...

Go north, freeze the old nads off, and play a MAC or SB team. Still, no one gives a $hit...

    I choose the warm location.

No matter the bowl Marshall plays in, they will play a MAC, SB or AAC team Facts! CUSA bowl tie ins are with those leagues.

  • I have been a critic of Doc, but if he closes the season with wins at FIU, at VaTech and a bowl victory this will have been a successful season regardless of failing to win the division.

  • Beating Virginia Tech will help this season, sure.  It won't make is successful season in my opinion, but it'll help.  I have a hard time considering any season successful when we are basically out of the running for the conference championship in early November.  Sad to say, but the debacles against MTSU/USM made it hard to say it was a successful season.  We used to 'Play for Championships', and that's still the standard I want us to strive for.  The losses to MTSU/USM pretty much made it clear that by early November (11/3) we were no longer Playing for the conference championship.  For that reason no, it's not a successful season regardless of our end records, if we beat VT or win our bowl game.  It may not be a failure of a season if we accomplish those things, but it won't be successful either.  Sorry, but I have a higher standard for Marshall football than a good record in a crappy conference, and hopefully beating up on a name program who is trying to keep a bowl streak alive.  I hope we win, and I'll be cheering the whole time.  But it won't have a huge impact on my thoughts on this season.  I do, however, give Hamrick props for getting this game scheduled and the subsequent other 2 games.  That was a great deal.
