I hope and pray that when Marshall has a home broadcast that the announcers are NOT as homer as these two guys are at Davidson !
If you watch our ESPN+ broadcasts, it features Jake Griffith doing the play-by-play. Jake is a talented young man who also serves as Marshall Athletic Department's Director of Multimedia and you can hear him do play-by-play for baseball, softball and women's basketball. His color commentator is usually former Mountain State Univ. basketball coach Bob Bolen, who has forgotten more basketball than most of us know, and has a unique and welcome insight.
Both of them have an affinity for Marshall that is apparent, but don't seem to allow that to cloud their judgment. If an opposing fan listened to them, however, that fan would likely think that both Jake and Bob are "homers" because their call of the game is necessarily directed toward Marshall fans. For instance, they spent a good amount of time discussing the out of bounds call on Kinsey late in the game vs. IUPUI - they were correct to criticize the call, but the tone (i.e. "How do you make that call unless you're anticipating him stepping out"; "That call is clearly wrong") might be interpreted by that same opposing fan as being "homers".
Personally, I want to hear announcers call Marshall games fairly, but from a Marshall perspective. Frank Giardinia was the best at that in my recollection, but we've actually been blessed with some superb radio and television play-by-play and color commentators throughout the years. Current announcer Steve Cotton is excellent, as are his color commentators in both major sports. I do miss Woody on the basketball call tho.
