  • The core of Wade, Henry, and Evans were from Zuffelato’s 20 win team the year before.

Explain to me rationally why Zuffelato was fired.

Not making the SoCon tournament in Charleston, WV one year and then losing in the first round the next.
He was a great guy. I still hear from him once in a while. He had a great NBA career in the front office

Ervin, Epps, Turney and others had a lot to do with the 25 wins

  • That was a very good first half of basketball from the Herd.  I can remember that...just a few years after I graduated.  Such a different game now....not sure there were any shots outside of 20 feet.  Probably a third of the shots from there now.

    Thanks for posting...good memories.

  • Why were we able to get bigger, faster, stronger grown men then but can't now?

  • Ervin, Epps and Bruce Morris, who didn't play much that year, were Huck's only additions to what was left over from Zuffelato's teams.

But Ervin and Epps started every game and Ervin"s scoring inside was crucial. He got 14 vs Ewing  and Georgetown in Vegas OOC game Huck made Evans into an elite guy.

  • Jeff Guthrie was a decent big man under Huck too.

We ought to be able to get one or two now.

Yeah Jeff was 6-9 but weighed 190--several pounds heavier than 6-9 Jeff Richardson.

  • Different times. Peneva would have been tough for the 84 team to defend.

  • That was the same Villanova team  that won the NCAA the next year.....That 2nd half was very deflating after the way the 1st half went.

He was always one of my favorites. Just a very good solid point guard. Nothing spectacular but got the job done.  I think I heard he's a lawyer in Atlanta now.

  • That was the same Villanova team  that won the NCAA the next year.....That 2nd half was very deflating after the way the 1st half went.

LaVerne Evans was unstoppable in the first half, but Villanova's coaches made some adjustments to slow him down offensively and we didn't have others picking up the scoring slack.  Also, believe they had a big man star, Easy Ed Pinckney, IIRC, who picked it up in the second half.

As for Zuffelato, I believe he was something like 78-40 in 4 seasons at MU, almost a .667 winning percentage.  However, one of his teams lost in the So Con tourney down at Roanoke and then after the league moved it to Charleston, the Herd laid an egg early on, blowing a good chance to win the whole enchilada before what would have been an overwhelmingly pro Herd crowd.  Believe Coach Z resigned rather than being canned and Herd administration let him resign.  He had been the head coach at Boston College prior to MU, so he wasn't exactly chopped liver.

Yep, Huck used some of the talent left by Coach Z, but ok on his own recruiting wise, including guys like Don Turney and, of course, Big Tom Curry from Louisiana, who had been, I believe, a Parade Magazine AA, and probably one of the highest rated recruits ever, along with Russell Lee, at MU!!

Sam Henry was reliable and steady, but Jeff Battle was electrifying when leading a fast break!

Me too. I've told my son about the all night, triple elimination tournament. Brad Daugherty was two rooms down from me that week. That was a fun camp, but it didn't get me an NBA contract.

yeah a coach Z recruit from Covington, KY.  I use to joke with Don about the quote coach Z used to describe him after his signing --" a young colt on wobbly legs"  and a couple of minutes later saying after Don starts to grow/mature with hard work he will become a thoroughbred.

Thanks, I thought he was a Huck recruit.  Believe he played for Huck a year or so.  Had a good shot for a 6'8' guy.
