  • . . is down 20 at the half to Purdue!!  The Hits just keep on coming for CUSA.  The Monarchs, IMO, if not the weakest CUSA team in recent Dances, are certainly the most offensively challenged!!  Guess Commish. Judy and her "brain trust" will start immediately after tonight's game on tweaking/improving our illustrious "POD" System!!!

    What a Cluster F^@&!!!!

  • They sh-- the bed.  Hurts the paycheck over a few years.  Knuckle up and start getting ready for next year.  A few teams could be really good next year but I feel ODU and Marshall will take a few steps back.  Looking at WKU, if their ringer stays, and UTSA as probably the guys to carry the torch.

ODU will lose Bassey but plenty of help on the way. Another 4 star and the top JUCO scorer in America coming in.
UTEP is loaded. They had 6 D1 transfer sitting out and had only 1 senior on this years team.
UTSA will be good IF the coach stays and Jackson stays with him.
Marshall will be just fine. This of you who have watched practice ll year know exactly why I feel this way.

  • It's all about match ups. We got a very favorable match up last year. If ODU would have been 14 seed in East instead of South they would have played LSU and they would have had a good chance of winning.  Purdue is a tough match up for a lot of teams and it wouldn't surprise me at all for them to be in the Final 4.

I did expect the league to play a little better in these little tournaments but it's hard to read much into those. They matter a lot to some teams and very little to others.

  • I know WKU has a solid B'ball tradition but they gotta be paying some of the kids coming in. Either that or Stansbury is a hell of a salesman - promises them the moon and a coed every night!

  • We must be like Duke and KY in practice!!!!!!!  So tired of hearing of the GREAT GREAT practices we have to only come out and lay a egg during games.

Considering where WKU is located , Id say the pot ( not the leafy kind ) gets sweetened an awful lot .

  • Just don't understand the thinking of WKU's AD, etc.  They made some impressive noise in last year's NIT.  I figured Stansbury would want the chance for his guys to make some more this year.  2 impressive NIT runs and then if the Toppers make it to the Dance next season and get a win or so, one would have to think that whatever marks Stansbury may have against him from his last "Major" HC gig would be overlooked and he would be on several schools radar.

Despite the Conference's record this year of stinking it up, the League has had some quality teams and Head Coaches the last few years.  Look at Coach Rhoades who was briefly at Rice and had the freshman of the year about 3 seasons ago, beating the Herd then, I believe.  He left, took the Head Job at VCU and his frosh hot shot followed.  This year, VCU is in the Dance, Rhoades is making a solid record at VCU, and the freshman, although currently injured, has been a star in the A-10.

Then there is Mike White, who led Louisiana Tech until moving on to Florida a couple years ago.  The Gators are back in the Dance and have already won a game.  Finally, long time MTSU head man, Kermit Davis, left the Raiders after last season for the had job at Ole Miss.  Don't look now, but Davis turned the Rebel program around real quick and was the SEC Coach of the Year!!

So this League has had some solid coaches who can coach AND recruit.  Can't keep them around, however.  May prove to repeat if schools like UTSA, North Texas and El Paso improve greatly in the next couple of years.  The first two don't appear to support their basketball program that well and draw many fans.  UTEP had a good following/fan base when the team was doing a lot better.

    WKU's location> Marshall's location.

Believe me, if it wasn't for my wife's sisters and a couple of my close friends, there's no way we would have ever come back to this area. Even my wife speaks wistfully about how good we had it in Elgin SC & Albany GA. And Albany is a PIT in its own right.

Well, we have all heard your practice reports from last year. None of which came close to the final outcome of this season. Which leads me to believe you know as much about basketball as lawn darts. Save yourself the embarrassment and pump the brakes on your predictions for the future.

I assume your first statement is WKU not ODU :)
UTEP just lost 2 guys and a recruit and a coach and a recruiter tied up in the admission scandals, so they are probably cooked for the next couple years.

Marshall will be just fine, but just fine wins pod 2.  With no stunning addition to the inside game I see struggles for another year in games that matter.  You don't lose 1 and 5 best scorers in the same season without some consequences.  And apparently you don't lose an inside presence like Penava without some consequences which no one accounted for prior to last season.  Let's hope we are at least competitive, but beyond that I'm not listening to anyone's prediction on Herd basketball.

Its still not a location where top recruits flock to unless theres added incentive.

  • Remember - - -  every shot you take at the conference is a shot at Marshall.

We are not dominating the league, therefore; we are the "them" also.

I don't even fault them for it.  Everybody is doing it and the NCAA is too chickenshit to enforce any rules because they know the big boys will take their ball and go somewhere else.  Need to start threatening this behavior with a loss of non-profit status.  Give the penalty some teeth.  When it costs more to cheat than it does to lose, the crap will stop.  Problem is most of the guys that could make federal cases out of these infractions are boosters and fans of one or more of these schools.

Ninegate, HM is a good dude who is a great supporter (both time & money) of damn near everything that's Herd. Furthermore, his opinions are informed opinions. To be sure, he does view the Herd through green-shaded glasses...but we ALL view some things through colored glasses of one shade or another. HM does have a pretty good eye for BB talent.

More on the colored glasses: Live & in person coach DD projects an easygoing, extroverted but friendly charisma. Some of this shows through in his media appearances. It's twice that in person. It's hard not to be optimistic around DD.
