  • for The Ohio State University. How rich is that?   If Marshall didn't try to do the same with "We are" we missed the boat.  Penn State is trying to appropriate it now.  I had to correct two PSU alumni in a restaurant when I heard them say We are Penn State.  I told them that I had attended Marshall and that we had a movie.  We laughed and I told them to come up with something original.

Didn't know that.  Thanks for the enlightenment.  Apparently they didn't know it either.

  • According to the article in the below link, the "we are Penn State" cheer started in 1948. I know that we didn't do We Are Marshall cheer at Fairfield in the 1960's.

"We Are…Penn State!” These words are what you hear loud and proud during the whole game. As one side of Beaver Stadium exclaims “WE ARE,” the other side responds “PENN STATE!” The chant, which has become the emblem that embodies Penn State, began in 1948 when the Penn State football team was set to play against the Southern Methodist University at the Cotton Bowl. Before game day, SMU wanted to meet with PSU to protest having Penn State’s black players play in the game. In response to this request, Penn State Guard and Team Captain Steve Suhey came to the defense of his teammates proclaiming, “We are Penn State. There will be no meetings.” Today, the slogan is everywhere in the Penn State community as a sign of strength and pride."

  • I think corporations should have to reimburse the government for costs incurred in rejecting such silly things as this , plus an equal amount for silly BS.  Trademarking the word The, silliest trademark fraud since Harley Davidson tried to trademark a sound.  HD failed and OSU should fail.

  • maybe they should trademark 'fondler' before PsU does.

not to dismiss what WE ARE means to Herd fans, but perhaps it's time we come up with a new or a previously used MU moniker as long as it was/is original, then immediately trademark it.  make a healthy, community involved PR stunt out of it.

  • So Penn State may have been chanting it before us. But we will really never know. As their alumni say it started in the mid 80's to really be a thing.

But their little story of how it started is a complete marketing lie. They claim way back some black players weren't allowed in a restaurant and so they said well were not eating here because "we are penn state." Although that is a great story and hopefully they did stick up for their teammates like that. There is zero proof it's real. The alumni say it just kinda steam rolled as a rumor and of course the PSU marketing department eats it up.
