Wasn't Darius Watts accused of a crime and it never happened? I think he was suspended for a few games before it was found it out it was a case of mistaken identity. I am not sure

Yes, a Marshall police officer actually showed a football program to the victim and they picked out Watts, who was later exonerated of the charges.

You can argue the merits of it, but Troy has had a fine career in the arena football league. He would not have had much of a chance in the NFL without the controversy but that's not the point. The issue was that ESPN reported his arrest national but never said a word about the mistaken identity.
