  • These once a year MAC series are great. We get a close, inexpensive, and winnable OOC game. Ohio series, Miami both went really well. I for one love the way Hamrick scheduled OOC.

  • Ohio, Toledo, and Miami are about the only MAC games I'm interested in. Maybe WMU.

We have enough conference creampuffs no one cares about to be adding MAC creampuffs no one cares about.

Also in 2027 that makes 2 MAC opponents. Not one.

  • Mostly love Hamrick's scheduling, but this one is awful. No MAC teams except Ohio or Miami please. And anytime we play there, it's almost an automatic loss.

  • Might as well be in a conference with cream puffs that save on travel costs. I’m sad to say.

  • The 5-year gap between the two games seems like a really long time for a return game (2022-2027).

I generally wouldn't complain about playing a MAC team that we have history with and is drive-able. But one that's consistently ranked in FCS territory and actually worse than most of C-USA? I don't know. Still better than VMI, Morgan State, or other actual FCS schools, I guess.

The 2022 schedule includes Notre Dame and Appy State, so it's probably not a bad idea to round it out with a very winnable game. Hopefully, the fourth out-of-conference game will be against a more middle tier team to help balance out the otherwise week in-conference strength of schedule.

  • The way it seems is that 2022 (3-years) is a 'last minute' deal when it comes to CFB scheduling. MH's thinking could very well be, "Let's get BGSU booked now so we aren't stuck with a MEAC team again."

  • That's a good point about timing. If he waits too long, he might be stuck scheduling two FCS games.

  • I like the BUGS series.  Very winnable game at home.  Great tailgating scene there.

Unfortunately, the Herd hasn't always fared well at their stadium.  Even Chad Pennington's 1998 team lost on that field.  I was there when Doc and Vinny lost there.  There is something about the open space of that stadium that doesn't work well for the Herd.

Easy for Herdfans to get to the away game.   I like it.

I'd love for you naysayers to come up with a list of teams that are (1) FBS, (2) willing to play Marshall in a home/home, (3) within driving distance, and (4) attractive to our fan base.  And, then, try to get FOUR of them a year for the next 10 years or so - or at least THREE, if you buy into the premise that MU needs to play an away money game every year or so.

Yeah.... I didn't think so.  Bring on BUGS.  I still hate most MAC schools, so BUGS will bear the brunt of my wrath in '22 and '27.

Are we playing high school football? Why does it have to be within driving distance.

"Driving distance" is a big deal for the fans who travel.

For the athletic dept, it's a hell of a lot cheaper to bus to games than it is to fly.

Good point. And if Bowling Green is the standard by which what's considered driveable then we've scheduled plenty of non driveable OOC games.

Also not every game has to be home and home. Hamrick has scheduled buy games.

That's my point.  Even if Mike schedules one 'buy' game every year, he still has to come up with THREE OOC foes a year.  Some of you want to eliminate FCS teams, and that's fine, but that means that you're trying to schedule THREE FBS schools/year that are willing to enter into a home/home with Marshall -- because no FBS school is going to come to Marshall on a 2 for 1.  So, who does that leave?  Let's explore...

    1.  Mountain West teams?  Probably not except extraordinary circumstances, like Boise State.  I've been told that Colorado State was approached and said no.  Ditto for the Air Force Academy.  So, let's assume Boise is the only one willing and that was for a limited, one time home/home.  That's ONE.

    2. Independents.  Liberty, Army, BYU, New Mexico State, UConn, UMass.  That's it, and the first 2 are on board with home/homes.  I am not sure that UMass or NM State get you anything and right now (from what is reported), BYU is focusing on home/homes with G5 teams, although they have scheduled games with East Carolina and Liberty (the latter was announced right after BYU decided to go independent and, I think, was a panic scheduling move).  Maybe you can talk BYU into something and maybe UConn.  That's FOUR.

    3. Sun Belt teams.  Really?  Other than App St and maybe Troy, are there any members of the Sun Belt that ring your bell?  That's TWO.

    4. AAC - I've been told that every school in the AAC has been contacted about a potential series and the only ones that have positively responded are ECU, Cincy and Navy and they are all on board with (at least) home/homes.  That's THREE.

    5.  MAC - We have long-time relationships with Miami and Ohio, and periodic home/homes with Akron, BUGS and Western Michigan.  I wouldn't be surprised to see Toledo or Kent show up on a future schedule, although I have no specific information on that.  I'd love to see Miami back on, but there's nothing imminent with them, either.

So, other than MAC schools, you're looking at about a 10 team pool in order to fill 3 to 4 games per year for the next 10 years.  I don't envy Mike, and you all that expect him to announce home/homes with P5 schools, or UCF, or Houston, or whomever on a regular basis just don't understand the difficulty a school like Marshall has in scheduling quality OOC foes (not in a recruiting base, traditionally difficult place to play, etc.).  That's why a lot of conferences are going to 20 game conference schedule in basketball, and I wouldn't be surprised to see C-USA go to a 9 game conference football schedule in the future.

I agree! If we ever want to get in the AAC, shouldn't we play AAC teams? Why "go backwards" to the MAC just for the convenience factor. Don't just dream about AAC, do something positive about going to the AAC. If we play and beat AAC teams, maybe the "powers that be" would say "Hey, maybe Marshall should be in the AAC." Being the best in the CUSA is just being the "cream of the crap!"
