  • If this replaces the FCS game that year then I am ok with it....if its in addition to an FCS game then I'm going to be salty.

Maybe its time we abandon the 1-1 with P5s and try to get 2-1s with them?

    I'd much rather play a 2-1 with a P5 as opposed to a 1-1 with BG.

  • You left out the best part, Bowling Green was ranked 20th in the AP Poll at the time. The AP was the main college football rankings. In fact, major news outlets keep running the score across the wire, because no one believed it was true that The Young Thundering Herd had defeated the 20th ranked Falcons. (Young Thundering Herd Stuns Bowling Green, 12-10) (Oct. 30, 1971).. I was fortunate enough to have been on the field as a 10 year kid for that win.. :)

Eman, I believe you have the Bowling Green game of 1971 mixed up with the Miami game of 1976.  Miami was ranked number 20 in the AP Poll, and yes, the score was run three times over the wire to make the skeptics believe that this colossal upset occurred.  Miami was ranked in the Pre-Season AP Poll, in 1976, at number 20.  The first regular season poll did not come out until September 14 (Marshall played Miami on September 11).  Bowling Green, in 1971, although they had only lost to ranked Toledo, was not ranked when MU played them in late October of 1971.

From the Associated Press Poll Archives:

Yes.. You're right...Thanks for correcting me!!.. Anyway, I was there on the field for both games.. I got excited about beating B-G 12-10.. According to Don Nehlen, B-G was going to blow us out the water.. It was a great win for The Young Thundering Herd. Beating 20th ranked Miami hit the AP news wire's and lit it up..

Well, I had to earn my wings at an early age. But those were the days. Do you remember the Hot Dr. Pepper, and Chicken Broth on the cold days? That Dr.Pepper hot was a great tasting drink..

  • I agree! If we ever want to get in the AAC, shouldn't we play AAC teams? Why "go backwards" to the MAC just for the convenience factor. Don't just dream about AAC, do something positive about going to the AAC. If we play and beat AAC teams, maybe the "powers that be" would say "Hey, maybe Marshall should be in the AAC." Being the best in the CUSA is just being the "cream of the crap!"

Hey, you juniors and rookies need to realize that it takes "two to tango".  Hamrick no doubt would schedule dozens of schools, but the feeling has to be mutual.  This board has gone over this dozens of times.  Specifically, when it comes to scheduling games with the Kentucky "Mildcats" and, of course, more recently, with the WVU "Chicken-EERS"!!!!!

  • For those complaining....How about WVU adding Long Island (LIU) in 2021......how would people react if we added them?

Hey  guys.  I’m not that old. Lol. And  I remember the hot Dr Pepper.   They used to have girls in grocery stores giving it out with a lemon wedge in it.    Also Campbell’s soup was 7 cans for a dollar  and would run on sale for 11 for a dollar.    Hamburger at McD’s was 17 cents and a cheeseburger was 24 cents.   My mother wouldn’t buy me the Cheeseburger because there “was no way in hell im paying 7 cents for a slice of cheese”.  Those were the days.

Hand Warmers (hehe).  We were in the earliest of Prindle Field Tailgaters, bright orange WV Vanagon, rusted through and through.  I loved it so much I didn't understand why they were building a new stadium...

Must have been a prior game, b/c MU had turf by 1971.  I think Mike was too old to have played in that game, in any event.

The game that stopped by 27 non winning streak was against BGSU on November 1, 1969. We won 21-16. We won the next game two games against Kent State 31-20 and ECU 38-7. We lost the final game of the season against Ohio U at Fairfleld 38-35. That was the game where the refs walked into or near the stands to reach their dressing rooms after the game and got assaulted by fans. I don't complain about refs, but they stole that game for us.

Mike was a fraternity brother of mine and I just checked my copy of the1970 Chief Justice (MU Yearbook) and Mike is listed a senior for the 1969 season.  If you scroll down the below link; you will find Mike listed on the 1969 team as uniform number 75.

I don't remember that game, but i'm sure I was there - never missed a home game or a driveable away game w/ my dad after he was hired by Marshall in '66.

  • Stopping the losing streak was a big deal on campus before the Homecoming game with BGSU. If we had lost that game we would be tied with UVA and Kansas State for the longest losing streak in college football. The football coaches got the entire student body involved with Stopping the Steak. The dorms; Greeks and other student organizations plastered the campus with signs to Stop the Streak. Dorms had bed sheet signs handing from the buildings.

The day before the game it rained (I think) and it rained during most of the game. Fairfield had no grass on most of the field by that time of the season with HHS; HEHS and Marshall all playing on the field. The rain really neutralized BG who had a good team. Thank goodness, it was fairly warm for a rainy November game.

I think two MU coaches came over to our fraternity house and to get us involved in making signs on the Sunday or Monday before the game. I seem to remember it was Frank Loria and maybe Rick Tolley. That was a long time ago and my memory fades. :o

Thanks for sharing this. I was just in junior high school when this happened and it is one of my first memories of Marshall football-The "Stop the Streak Week". I went to my first Herd game later that year-East Carolina and then Ohio U for the closer.

Campbell soup!  Today, you're lucky to get one can of their tomato soup for a buck, and that's when it is "on sale"!!  As for the cheap hamburgers, anyone remember when the BBF, Burger Boy Foodarama, and their "whirling satellite" was on 4th Ave., about 2-3 blocks down from campus?  Their burgers were actually 15 cents!  Guy in my dorm worked there.  ALWAYS remember his words:  "NEVER, EVER order the chicken"!!  ;D
