  • Nah.

But we'll probably wear black pants despite black being the primary color of the team we're playing.

I remember the last time they were here. We declared a "white out"  All our fans were in white but we failed to give UC adequate notice for them to wear a dark color. So, they came in wearing "all white"

I hope we never wear that helmet color again. We played well for one game against Houston, after that we still had losing seasons. We need to stay with tradition and stop trying to be like other teams. That's why I love watching Bama, Penn State, they stick to tradition and take care of business.

I totally agree E. I hated the green helmets to begin with but being that I am a Yankee fan, its is all about tradition with me too.  ;)

  • I liked the green helmets. I think a matte kelly green helmet would look good.

I don't really get the "stick to tradition" argument. First, we aren't a blue blood Power 5.

Second, we've never really had a "traditional" look like Alabama or Penn State to stick to.

Since 1962 we've had 21 different helmet styles.   http://media.herald-dispatch.com/mucrash/gallery_view.php?id=607130801&i=35  (the link doesn't include the Snyder green helmets)

In 1983 we used yellow in our jerseys and helmet. In 1989 we had a silver helmet.

People may have jerseys and helmets that were their favorites but to say we have 1 style uniform that we have to stick to because of tradition is a bit of revisionist history IMO.

  • Actually Sonny had The Herd in yellow pants for a few games. The MU Alumni Association took issue with the yellow pants and Sonny had to stop using them. I seem to remember Sonny was desperate to change the losing attitude and thought the pants might help.

Sonny did get the program moving in the right direction. I know I have asked this before but don’t recall the answer. Is he in the MU HOF?

  • Sonny replaced Frank Elwood. Elwood. Frank was a former player for Woody Hayes at OSU and a long time OU assistant coach. Frank took a MAC approach in recruiting players. Sonny came in and tried to run off Frank's players and went with players who had speed, which was a southern approach to football. What always amazed me was that Sonny was a three yards and cloud of dust offense. One would think that Sonny, who was a former NFL wide receiver, would have had thrown the ball more. Sonny offenses were very boring.

Parrish came in and took Sonny's players and ran a wide open offense and the rest is history. Parrish took Carl Fodor, a Sonny recruit and and just threw the ball. I think Fodor was considering leaving MU until Parrish arrive on campus.

I would run into Sonny when I lived in Virginia. He was a character and ended up in radio in Virginia and calling The Herd games. He had a daily commentary on several Virginia radio stations. Sonny seem happy and he loved The Herd.

Sonny's offense was run to the left on first down, run to the right on second down, throw on 3rd down and punt.

That’s a damn shame. For his coaching and the tv work with Keith, he should be in. Most realize he moved the needle for football and set Parrish up well for the 84 season.

FWIW: Sonny was 39-69-1 in five seasons at Marshall.  His fifth and final season he was 4-7 and he finished in fifth place in the Southern Conference at 3-4. Sonny definitely improved the program. The expectations were high for his fifth season and he started off with a loss to EMU, a really bad team, and he never recovered from that loss. I seem to remember he started a JC quarterback that game who suppose to be the qb to make The Herd a winner. The transfer qb never panned out and really hurt the team. I think Fodor ended up as qb for the final part of the season. It was a long ago and  my memory may not be correct. I can't find a lot of info on the internet about those days.

This may be true, but in the modern era of college football and games on TV....Marshall has the one look that people recognize.

Had we jumped on the bandwagon circa 2005 when the uniform stuff first started it would have been one thing. At this point, we need to stick with our classic look imo.

I would like to see a 1970-71 throwback uniform though.

I've got no problem with new coaching staffs shaking up the players from a failed coach.

The problem with Sonny was he could recruit, but couldn't retain.  He managed to recruit talent far above the Div 1-a level we were in, then the fantastic recruit would leave after a year or two without ever having made any significant contribution.   He would have been successful if he hadn't been as overbearing. The program was in constant turmoil while Sonny was here.  Parrish came in an understood how to manage and use the players that Sonny couldn't do.

"We are the sons of Marshall" fight song..

We are the sons of Marshall
Sons of the great John Marshall
Year after year we go to Marshall U.
Cheering for our team and gaining knowledge, too
    Proudly we wear our colors
    Love and loyalty we share
    Sure from far and near
    You’ll always hear
    The wearing of the green
For it’s the (Green and White) of Marshall U.
This is as traditional as it gets!

(Green and White has been Marshall colors from day one and should be now). Also, I hope this will put to rest about black being a team color..

Good amount of black in that official logo.

But the topic was about helmet color. Which was green. Which is one of the two colors you want us to use. And my reply was that we have no traditional helmet or jersey like you imply. No one was talking black.

I know you were talking about the helmet. I was emphasizing about black being added as a color, because it's been debated on here a lot. And, besides, The winningest team of the 90's wore the white helmet. As Herdfan 129 said, " fans  across the nation recognize the white helmet and Marshall team jersey when Pruett was here.

  • He should be in our HOF for his color commentary on the THN alone.

A friend of mine from Fairland (Greg Smith, who has passed away) was the starting center for 2 or 3 years under Sonny. I remember that he said while they lost a lot, that they were in much better condition than almost any of their opponents.

"Looks he's got a hitch in his getty up."
"Looks like Coach has something in his eye."
In memory of Dr Daniel P Babb who taught so much to so many.

  • White helmet should be the main helmet 95% of games. But nothing wrong with going all green once every few years for some extra hype. Just read an article on Lane Kiffin's Tennessee tenure on ESPN .com and he mentioned that when they debuted their black and orange hallowen uniforms vs #21 South Carolina they knew they were going to win the second they put the jerseys on. And they went out and won.

That said I think the Green helmet they used in 2009 needs cleaned up, didn't look great for some reason. The Jets one from Monday was sharp.

If it takes putting on a new uni and helmet to get a team motivated for a game, a lot of coaches are in Big! trouble. Kiffin sounds a lot like Snyder getting the team up trying on a new helmet uni. Both were losing coaches in the end. lol..

Spot on, E.  No better example than our own Herd back in the day.  In a night game at "Ye Olde Fairfield" versus Toledo ole Sonny Randle had the Herd go off the field after pre game warm ups.  When the Herd re-emerged for the kick-off, the team had donned bright yellow pants.  Crowd went wild, team was "jacked", one of Sonny's favorite words, and we shut out the Rockets, 17-0!!

This kind of "hype" doesn't usually last, and it didn't for Sonny's teams at MU, none of whom had a winning record!!
