  • Interesting topic over on the CSNbbs Realignment board. The MEAC is in trouble with teams leaving the league. The idea is Sun Belt and C-USA East schools could join the MEAC if it's going to fall apart, buy the shell for the NCAA tournament credits & league continuity rules and just rename it. Similar to what AAC schools did with the Big East. And what happened to the WAC in 2011. It would take some creative and proactive leadership from a few schools but theoretically possible.

  • Not that I believe any current CUSA E leaders would actually pursue this, but what would this look like in terms of members? I would imagine you would need Liberty and their dollars to help pay for such an endeavor. Also, if JMU was to ever make the jump then something like this maybe enough to push them to do it so I would think you could include them. What happens to the leftover MEAC schools? They stay onboard as basketball only?

The idea for the remaining MEAC schools would be to help them find another conference or drop back to D2. That's what's been happening with the other schools that have left.

Interesting, so basically a group of schools could essentially buy the MEAC, keep NCAA credits and eligibility while not having any of the original MEAC members. The only way I could see this sparking interest is if Liberty decides they really want to be in a conference. They have the money to make something like this work, and could influence other schools like ODU to join up. Marshall would probably be on board too if it meant staying with ODU, WKU, and Charlotte.

    Basically.

The WAC lineup in 2020 of New Mexico State, Seattle, Chicago State, UTRGV, Utah Valley, Cal Baptist, Tarleton State, and Dixie State is nothing like their 2011 lineup of Louisiana Tech, Nevada, Utah State, Hawaii, San Jose State, Fresno State, New Mexico State, and Idaho.

The AAC is legally the old Big East. When those schools joined and the Catholic 7 decided they didn't want to be in the league with them the new schools sold the Big East name to the C7 and became the AAC. (that situation was a little different but still new schools joining a league and turning it to something else)

In that thread on CSNbbs BruceMcF explains it as--

What is bizarre, but until and unless the NCAA in its infinite(simal?) wisdom change the rule is the rule, is that the identity of the members doesn't matter any more.

Before 2011, continuity was seven or more schools that had played each other annually over a certain number of years.

In 2011, under the old rule, the WAC would have had to dissolve. They had too many schools leaving and not enough schools coming in from the same conference.

So they scrapped the old rule and made it eight years of continuity in the conference meeting the multi-sport and NCAA participation-eligibility requirements.

So now if all the teams leave a conference and a whole new set of teams come in, it's still continuity as long as they meet the multi-sport and tournament eligibility rules both before and after the complete turnover.

  • I am not sure how many credits that MEAC has? I think the conference has only couple of victories in the Big Dance: Coppin State in 1997; Hampton in 20001 and Norfolk State in 2012.

I think I misspoke with "NCAA credits". I was more thinking "NCAA auto-bids". Sorry about that.

One last question on the subject, would the new conference still be eligible for the CFB playoff money and the access bowl?

  • I know there are several crazy things going on in the world but the fact we are talking about MU being in the MEAC tells me it is the end...

I think that would be the hold up. Unless the CFP contract was amended I don't think so.

  • I dont think MU will ever get an access bowl bid . College football is changing and MU will probably be one of the schools to get left behind . Hopefully , MU already has different plans set up to put in place but I seriously doubt it . I think the current athletic dept is in over their football head.

  • Whatever changes may come in this regard, pretty sure, based on its history for quite a few years, that the Herd Athletic Department's actions will be REACTIVE rather than PROACTIVE!

Yep, which is why I have accepted being in CUSA 3.0. I believe our leadership is content here and with the way things are. All the quotes I’ve seen from other ADs within CUSA seem pretty consistent with Hamrick regarding realignment. Basically they shut down the conversation immediately. It’s pretty obvious to me that they are all hell bent on making CUSA work regardless of the consequences.
