Do you not see the difference between a man that helped form this imperfect Union, created the modern judicial system of constitutional review, authored hundreds of opinions that helped form the basis of US jurisprudence but who, unfortunately, was a slave-owner, as opposed to a person that really did nothing to enhance the area, that owned humans, that whipped and beat humans, that paid bounties to capture humans to return them to chains, that rode into Maryland and Pennsylvania for the specific goal to find free blacks, unlawfully enslave them and then transport them to Richmond for sale and profit?  Not to mention that he led Confederate raiders against the Union with the motivation to keep his human property? 

I really have trouble understanding how people cannot see the difference between the Founders and the Traitors.

We're not discussing "they".  We're talking about Marshall University, and the people that run it.  I agree that there is a lot of inconsistency and unsupportable actions on the part of the demonstrators, but those should not deter us from doing the right thing - including renaming Jenkins Hall

Definitely picking and choosing to fit an agenda..you see it every day including in sports with what Dashawn Jackson posted more than once views against Jewish people..why no outrage and demanding he be cut?  Hitler could be argued is the worse human in the history of the world.

Same goes with the Current MU situation...statues are being taking down because the men owned slaves...they also wore powdered wigs..I just believe one cannot judge a man from 200 years ago on today’s standards.

I love MU as much as anyone I know, and yet I could not defend a difference in John Marshall and many of those being attacked for their choices in the same time frame as his.  You can't pick and choose like its a good apple or bad apple in a bin. This is what people hate; keep what they like and attack what they personally don't.

Do I think Marshall will remain Marshall, but even this discussion shows that in today's eyes, those who think they should have seen the same 100 years ago, there is now a tainted, or at least and asteric, denoted by his name.

As for me, the civil war was the most important teaching moment in our history; trying to destroy the stories and demean the leaders on either side is a sad attempt to judge people of 100 years ago through today's eyes. It makes no sense, will create more segregation than most realize, and will solve no cases of injustice for today's American people.  We'd be better off to continue to teach it, show how much the deaths meant to America, how we've learned from it, and how important it is to never let that happen to Americans again.  But hey, that's just my opinion.

Lets get the facts straight on Byrd. He was in fact a former member of the KKK.As a matter of fact he organized the chapter in his area, but the key word is FORMER. In fact Byrd admitted to it and is on record to apologizing for his beliefs. Not only did he apologize, but he went on to attempt to make amends for his past deeds. That is why the NAACP ranked him as one of the the top senators for supporting their issues.

Now I am sure some will say he changed for political reasons, maybe so. However, I prefer to not take the cynical or political approach and analyze the situation. My question is did Byrd really have to help minorities to advance his political career? After all he had been a State Senator for a state which was 98% white for over 40 some years, plus NOBODY was going to defeat him.


As to Jenkins, what do we know about him? He fought against the United States of America in an attempt to keep African-Americans in bondage. Seeing that Marshall has more than white students on it campus and WANTS to recruit more, it is probably a good idea to change the name.

At to our namesake John Marshall...... He was quite a confusing character..... He was in fact a slave owner, but believed slavery was a sin. In fact, he formed the American Colonization Society which purpose was to send blacks back to Africa. Not only did he do this, but he also represented slaves for free to win their freedom. Despite all of these actions he died still having several slaves.

My personal opinion on Marshall is the good outweighed the bad and we must take into account the times he lived in. Slavery was a huge part of our society, in particular Virginia. The fact he was willing to represent Slaves in that era, to me , is a big statement.

Jenkins probably had the largest slave plantation in West Virginia. During the war he captured free blacks and sold them into slavery in Richmond.


I think we should rename the building for Carter G Woodson.

 Known as the  Father of Black History. He was an educator and grew up in Huntington.

I for one , do not want to know anything about Trumps taxes . I also dont want to know about Obamas or Bidens , or Pelosis or Mitch McConnell. I think taxes shouldnt be made public , either party or regular Jon Q Public.

Without limits on its subpoena powers, Congress could 'exert an imperious control' over the Executive Branch and aggrandize itself at the President’s expense. I think this is nothing more than Congress trying to take over government.
