  • Below is an article in The Athletic.  In it Holiday states that a fill-in game on Oct 3 looks unlikely.

Marshall just defeated its third AP-ranked opponent in school history and is ranked in the AP poll for the first time since 2014. But any momentum from that has essentially stopped.

That’s because the No. 25 Thundering Herd aren’t scheduled to play another game until Oct. 10, three weeks after last Saturday’s 17-7 win against Appalachian State. The COVID-19 pandemic’s effect on college football has left some schools with large breaks in the schedule.
“You’re happy with what’s going on,” head coach Doc Holliday said this week about his team’s start. “I just have concerns because we don’t play for three weeks. The way things are right now, it’s hard to get in a rhythm and hard to get any kind of routine. That concerns me, staying sharp and staying crisp and keeping the guys going in the right direction. That’s something we’ve never had to deal with. There’s no blueprint for what’s happening right now.”

Before the pandemic, Marshall was supposed to play East Carolina, Pitt, Ohio, Boise State and Rice the first five weeks. Instead, because of postponements and cancellations, the Thundering Herd are 2-0 with wins against Eastern Kentucky and Appalachian State and now have another two weeks off. The conference game with Rice might be rescheduled on the back end, but at the moment, Marshall has only six games left on the schedule.

Holiday said Marshall tried to get a game scheduled for this week or next but couldn’t make something work. He’d have liked to play one, so his team didn’t have so much time off.

“I don’t think there’s any question,” he said. “We’ll get another game eventually. The conference will get us another game. I was hoping that was Oct. 3, but that doesn’t look like the case. We can’t control that.”

The idle weeks won’t be treated like normal idle weeks, because there are two. Holliday said Marshall plans to focus on depth and getting more players ready to play. There aren’t many reps for the third team in preseason camp, especially this year, and those players are even more important when positive COVID-19 tests or contact tracing can take out depth at a position at any time.

“You’ve got to get more players ready to play right now than ever before,” Holliday said. “You don’t know when they’re going to have to play.”

For now, Marshall will work on itself and work on preparing for Western Kentucky on Oct. 10. Things change by the week in college football, and long waits are the new normal. This is North Carolina’s second consecutive week off after its game against Charlotte was canceled and the Tar Heels couldn’t find an opponent for this week. This is college football in 2020.

Marshall will also enjoy its top-25 ranking while it can. The Big Ten’s impending return will likely knock the No. 25 Thundering Herd out of the poll anyway, but that doesn’t change the exposure Marshall got in its first two games.

“Anytime you can get the top 25, that’s great for your program,’ Holliday said. “The one thing has been a really positive for us is we’ve had two national TV audiences back to back. We had a 3:30 spot on CBS, which was huge for our program, huge for our school and our community and our fan base. The same thing with ESPN game a couple weeks prior with Eastern Kentucky. So that’s been great for us. Our kids have embraced it and we’ve enjoyed it.”

  • He was on statewide talk line Monday and expressed hope that we may get something on October 3rd. Things change so quickly, very fluid.

The league did us no favors.

  • Play anyone anywhere at this point..don’t be picky.  Play the 1970 Steelers teams if you have to.  The one I will never understand is why we couldn’t finalize something this week with UNC.

  • Three weeks is a long layoff especially when the team is playing well.  This year will test everyones mental makeup.

I thought the CUSA Championship Game was scheduled for December 5th?

We have an open week for the Saturday after Thanksgiving, November 28th.

In addition to the NFL, we could add some high school teams to the schedule, lol.  We played (and lost to) Ironton High in 1897!  I believe we also have losing all time records against Huntington High and the Charleston YMCA!  It's payback time!  :D

I got to think since UNC  was not allowed to have fans (Gov just announced yesterday soon to be 7% capacity) it was not worth the expense to A) Pay Marshall to come down B) Have the game day operation expense C) not have any gate /concession revenue to play meaningless non conference game.

Ok with all of those thoughts it is just the narrative from both MU and UNC is that they couldn’t put a game together...seems like the TV money would have covered any costs for MU to play...I would just like for someone to ask Hamrick or UNC if they even spoke about a game.

  • Houston has had its game this weekend cancelled, and has lost all 4 weekends due to their opponents cancelling.  They were supposed to have a bye on 10/3 before a Thursday night game the following week.  At this point, I'd think Houston would play anyone next week.

That's one of the UGHs I took from the article as well.  If CUSA sticks us with Rice on 12/5, then that knocks out the chance we get to schedule ECU that day.  Unless, we say pretty please and CUSA pushes the champ game back to 12/19 -- which is where several conference championships will be played.

But I'm not counting on CUSA doing what's best for us.

The game might have been a money loser for UNC, but the Tar Heels athletic department has plenty of money.  Money was not the issue.  Either the Tar Heels or the Herd did not really want to play anybody.

The CUSA Champ game is scheduled for 12/5.  But just about every other conference is pushing their champ game further back in December.  So, CUSA could easily do that as well.

'Course that's assuming the CUSA administration acts like a regular conference.  ::)

  • Right now MU has an open date on Nov. 7th.  Who knows how many other schools with a similar open date may lose a game or so between now and then?  To me, you'd think that the CUSA's leadership, PI$$ Poor as they may be, would take charge, and try to keep the League schedules as equitable as possible, rescheduling games as needed.  Some teams may bitch and not like it, but they are in a conference and all schools should abide by conference rules and decisions, or get the heck out!

  • Not a time to ask for a 1-1. We need to play a game period. If not say goodbye to the AP ranking. Hell may be gone after today anyway.

  • I think this may work to our favor. You’re essentially giving this team a training camp again with a freshman QB to get further into rhythm and fix mistakes. While I don’t like bye weeks. I do like Doc in a bowl prep scenario for a game against WKU.

Really? You think having two weeks off works in our favor? It's not a training camp, it's a delay where the team, QB, included cannot get into any Game Speed rhythm at all. Tempo in practices is much different then in a real game.  I'm starting to wonder if Hamrick really wants to schedule a game. NC really wanted one, no go. Now Houston, UAB and ECU looking for next week; no go. We are one Conference Game postponement and we are ineligible to go the the Championship game even if we qualify. You need min of 6 conference games to be eligible. We are at 6 now. One mishap and we could be undefeated, in the Top 25, and watching a team we beat in the east go to the CUSA Champ without us.

I'm starting to wonder if Hamrick is really trying like people assume. To me, He is not trying very hard.

  • You run it like a practice/camp hybrid. You’re still practicing, still prepping, you can even run scrimmages etc. Doc can go 1 vs 1s and have a pretty solid scrimmage at this point. We have weeks to prep and plan for WKU to allow for the game to come to him. I get everyone wants games, coach wants games, the team wants games but you make the best of it.

If you want to know how I came to this thought. In talking to several current and ex players who played at the highest level all said that’s how they would view/work an in season extended break. That’s how we were prepping the season as well but we got shut down totally.

If our QB was a senior, I’d probably think different, but the extra practice and prep will be good for him. Games can be lost really easy by what happens Monday through Friday.
