  • We drop 7 spots with these 7 teams added since last week who jumped ahead of us:

    Ohio State
    Penn State
    Michigan
    Wisconsin
    Minnesota
    USC
    Oregon

EDIT: Also, Mississippi State jumped from 33 to 16 after beating LSU.  Argument could be made we moved up a spot given the Big 10 and Pac 12 are now being counted.

  • Guess the pollsters were more impressed with the PAC 12 and Big 10 teams, even though they have yet to play a game, than they were with the Herd's opponent, "OPEN", this week end!  :)

Louisiana was ranked above us last week. They played and won yesterday and also dropped out.
They must feel worse than us.

I think this is good news.  Getting App State ranked and then us beating them on CBS primetime and then to get ranked ourselves put us in the minds of voters WAY BETTER than if every conference would have started on time and we were on Facebook.  We wouldn't be receiving any votes in that scenario.

  • Let’s face it. Ohio st, Penn St etc are better than Marshall. Just keep winning and we can claw back. But we aren’t going to be ahead of those teams.

It is just funny how low minded opinions of Marshall sports compared to Say..the big10,12,pac12 and their fanbase! Marshall was looked at as a possible offer for big ten membership at one time during the 90’s. How dare you even suggest such an asinine statement ....have you no vision for the future of Marshall...Rick Tolley did along with many of the 75 did! Marshall paid in blood what many today could never pay even to save a nation!

Facts are facts. We are no Ohio St. and personally I hate Ohio St almost as much as WV. But to think we should be ranked ahead of them with what they have done the last few years and what they have coming back is crazy talk. Just sayin!!!

Wow!  I never knew Marshall was even getting sniffed by the Big 10 in the 90's.  Interesting

With the exception of Nebraska,  all Big10 members are AAU schools.
Rice is the only CUSA member of that class

I agree. When sports fans were starved for football the Herd delivered twice with exciting performances in prime spots on national tv. Regardless of rank you can't erase what millions watched. Was great for Marshall's brand recognition.

  • Isn't there some credence to Marshall joining C-USA earlier than it did and using it as some kind of stepping stone into the Big East when it was on the cusp of instability? I've heard reliable people mention that. Marshall into the Big 10 just sounds ridiculous.

  • Getting bumped in the rankings while on a double bye sucks but realistically, which of these teams would lose...

    Ohio State
    Penn State
    Michigan
    Wisconsin
    Minnesota
    USC
    Oregon

To any of the teams remaining on the Herd's schedule?

    Western Kentucky
    Louisiana Tech
    Florida Atlantic
    Florida International
    Middle Tennessee
    Charlotte
    Rice

The only way to get back into the top 25 is to keep winning and keep winning big. C-USA strength-of-schedule isn't doing the Herd any favors. The only thing not in the Herd's hands is how well App St will do. The SBC is very hot right now and it's unclear how good App is.

Legend has it that CUSA approached Marshall back in the late 90'S, early 2000's about joining the league. I think at the time West was the AD. From what I recall, it was originally for football only and we were trying to find a league for the rest of our sports. Rumor was the Horizon was the top pick but for some reason, that fell through. I think it fizzled after that until the second offer came in late 2003 or early 2004. I may be wrong on this stuff, maybe someone else has more detail.

I was at a trade show in Asheville, NC waiting for the announcement that we had joined CUSA. Rumor had it that the field logos were already at Marshall. Then it fell apart the the announcement was made that UCF had joined the MAC. That took a lot of wind out of my sails.

  • It was before my time in Huntington but it's interesting to think about what would have happened if Marshall joined C-USA when it was still a top tier mid-major program. As somewhat of an outsider looking in, everything surrounding C-USA looks like a mess. A few million in exit fees to be a bottom dweller for 8 years and then everyone leaving for the AAC.
