With the departure of head football coach Ellis Johnson to Mississippi State, Athletic Director Les Robinson promoted last season’s offensive coordinator John Zernhelt to the head job almost a month after the position came open. A 27 year coaching veteran, Zernhelt beat out defensive coordinator Les Herrin after Robinson decided to stay within the program for a new coach. "Bringing somebody in, (having to) get a new staff, recruiting is a crap shoot," he said. "The players here don't know them, so you've got to start all over.”http://www.citadelbrigadier.com/news/2004/02/20/Sports/Citadel.Names.New.Football.Coach-615898.shtml
Higgins becomes third coach in five yearsAssociated PressCHARLESTON, S.C. -- Detroit Lions assistant Kevin Higgins was hired Thursday as the football coach at The Citadel, which went 3-7 last season.Kevin Higgins, the third coach at The Citadel in the past five years, coached quarterbacks and wide receivers for the Lions last season. He replaces John Zernhelt, who was hired as a New York Jets assistant."Kevin Higgins in the right coach at the right time for Citadel football," college president Maj. Gen. John Grinalds said. "The vacancy caught us off guard, so I was not prepared to fill it immediately."Before joining the NFL, Higgins coached Division I-AA at Lehigh from 1994-00. He led the Mountain Hawks to three straight NCAA playoff appearances."When I went to the NFL, I had a chance to work with great coaches, but when I stepped into the Silver Dome for the first time, I knew I would coach in college again," Higgins said. "The Citadel had exactly what I was looking for in its academics, history and football. ... Discipline is very important to football success. What greater place to coach than at a military school where discipline is stressed."Zernhelt's predecessor, Ellis Johnson, coached three years at his alma mater before becoming Mississippi State's defensive coordinator.
