You are likely correct, having two days to prepare and flying 2000 miles across country to play was in hindsight, a regrettable decision.

Maybe, but I admire their moxy.  There was a time Marshall had a similar attitude, I really miss those days.

I agree. Nothing really to lose for BYU since they aren't in a conference, playing for a big-time bowl game is all they have to play for. They needed a win over a ranked opponent to help their case according to the committee. They went for it. They didn't get it, but losing didn't change their postseason destination. Winning might have. They did the right thing. Just didn't pull out the W, but they didn't back down and that's worth something.
