  • Did you realize that the Herd only missed 1 shot (FG) the last 12 minutes of the game with Ohio?

I was at the Panther's game Sunday, watching Carolina move up in the NFL draft, and therefore didn't watch the Marshall v Ohio basketball game until that evening.  I had noticed in the stats that Marshall only missed 5 shots (FG--we also missed 3 FTs) in the 2nd half.  So, when my son and I watched the recording that night we counted the 2nd half misses.  With the Herd up 50-45, at the 12:16 mark, West missed the 4th shot of the 2nd half.  For the last 12 minutes of the game, the Herd missed only one shot.  Knowing that fact, we were surprised we only won by 14 points, increasing the lead only by 9 points, yet missing just 1 shot the rest of the game.

First, we only took 11 shots during those 12 minutes.  Therefore, we made 10 of 11 FGs to end the game.  However, during that same span we committed 7 Turnovers--nearly half of our 15 in the whole game; had those been missed shots, we'd have been only 10 for 18.

Second, the 10 of 11 shooting was due more to the Herd's shot selection than a hot streak.  The 11 shots included the following: 1) a fastbreak layup by Taylor, 2) 3pter by Kinsey, 3) drive & layup by Taylor, 4) 3pter by Beyers, 5) mid-range jumpshot by Killen at foul line elbow, 6) mid-range shot in the paint by Kinsey, 7) drive and dunk by Beyers, 8) drive and dunk by Kinsey, 9) ONE MISS on a 3pter by Beyers, but Taylor got the offensive rebound & West got fouled and made 1 of 2 FTs, 10) tomahawk dunk by Beyers, and 11) oop layup by Williams from Taylor.  (The only empty possessions we had during that entire span were the 7 turnovers.)

That's a total of 6 dunks & layups--all made--leaving only 5 "jump" shots--2 mid-range & 3 3pters.  Hitting 4 of 5 jump shots probably happens a couple times a game for most teams, as well as missing 4 of 5 jump shots.  The thing that stood out to me was that during that span--in which the Herd won the game--we took more dunks and layups than jumpshots.  Thinking back over the 4 games, I'm betting that's the difference in the team this year.  Better shot selection is translating into a better FG % as well as getting fouled more and getting to the line for the chance to knock down some FTs.

I’ve been saying the same thing. This team looks for good shots and just doesn’t jack up quick 3s. I really like the way they run their offense.

  • Glad you were able to get out and enjoy the game. Sorry you had to take the L. I’ve watched almost every Broncos game this season- bad. My family are a bunch of Broncos fans and when the schedule was released had planned to make the game in Charlotte. Well... covid.

I’m shocked Denver actually won. I chose to watch MU in attempt to avoid another mile high let down.

  • Free throw shooting has noticeably improved since last season. Free throws cost us a couple of games last season.

LOL, don't feel sorry for me that the Panthers lost.  I'd be happy if we lost the rest of them.  It's all about draft picks at this point.  Next year I want some wins, not now :)

I'm a little concerned Carolina is 0-7 when they have had the chance to tie or win the game late in the 4th Q.  (Their 2 wins in one score games happened when they were ahead and held on for dear life at the end.)  But I think a big part of that is the college coaching staff figuring out how to call the pro game.  I've treated this season as a whole year of preseason games and getting ready for the 2021 regular season :)

Last year we shot 66.3% from the line. This year 74.3%  Quite an improvement for sure

Hows your no. 1 draft pick working out?  He went to high school with my two kids. I was around the football team while my son played in the marching band. I saw him play the first game as a sophomore and told my daughter. That is a future NFL player right there. He was THAT dominant in high school. Pretty good kid too.

Shooting foul shots at around a 75% clip is pretty darn good.  Hopefully, we can maintain that pace over the course of the season.  Could make a difference in some tight games through the schedule!

Brown was a good choice for the first round.  I'd say the local press has graded his selection and his production this year well.  He is getting overshadowed by Jeremy Chinn, who is a legitimate Rookie of the Year candidate--leads the team in tackles, has defensive 2 TDs, forced a fumble Sunday that came 3 yards short of another defensive TD.  None of that, however, should diminish the wisdom in picking Brown, first.  Sunday, I sat near a couple of the players families.  His name came up in a brief conversation.  He's obviously well-liked and respected by one player and his family.  Glad to hear some more background.

Now, about your Falcons -- the Panthers are worse player personnel wise and I just have to say that it is entirely unprofessional and completely unfair that the Falcons keep blowing 4th Q leads just to get a better draft pick than us!  ;)

Derrick is really a good kid. I'm not sure his little brother will ever see the field at Auburn. I personally think they signed him just to keep Derrick around for his senior year. My falcons suck. Nothing else to it. Arthur Blank needs to wipe the slate clean and start over. I'm so tired of the blown 4th quarter games and it started back with the super bowl. If I were 20 years younger, I would have thrown a beer bottle trough my tv when they botched that onside kick against the cowboys. The Atlanta sports jinx.

  • I lost interest in the Panthers when let they Rivera go and the new owner immediately became politically correct. See what Rivera does with Washington, it is already beginning to happen, intellectually he is light years ahead of most of the coaches in the NFL.
