  • How a 16 team playoff involving all 10 conf champs and 6 at-large bids could look. I took the highest ranked teams according to the CFP rankings and awarded the conf championship based on those rankings and seeded teams based on those. If teams were not ranked in CFP i used the AP poll.
16 team - 1 VALID National Champion. I will update again after this weekends championships amd new rankings.

    What could be...

    1 - Alabama (SEC Champ)
    16 - Marshall (CUSA Champ)

    8 - Georgia (at-large)
    9 - Cincinnati (AAC Champ)

    5 - Texas A&M (At-large)
12 - Coastal Carolina (Sun Belt Champ)

    4 - Ohio State (Big 10 Champ)
    13 - Southern Cal (Pac 12 Champ

    6 - Iowa State (Big 12 Champ)
    11 - Indiana (at large)

    3 - Clemson (At-large)
14 - San Jose State (MTN West Champ)

    7 - Florida (At-large)
    10 - Oklahoma (At-Large)

2 - Notre Dame (ACC Champ)
    15 - Buffalo (MAC Champ)

  • If the NCAA ever adopts a system like this it would kill teams like Marshall financially.  This system makes regular season conference games the only priority for P5 teams.  Marshall and other mid-majors would never get money games from P5 schools because the teams could not take the chance of losing that game.  P5 teams would have to go to a schedule format where the only games they play annually are conference games and possibly 1 out of conference game.  That game would be against a low level G5 school with no hopes of of winning.  Marshall and other quality mid-major teams would then be forced to follow suit and play fewer out of conference games and our available opponents would not be crowd drawers.  We would get stuck playing even weaker schedules than we can possibly play now and the Joan would never sellout.

As sad as it is to say, Mid Major teams need the bowl system to stay the way it is for financial reasons and accept that in most years, they will not be represented in the playoff picture.  The exception would be the years you are able to schedule a couple of quality P5 schools and pull off upsets.  Then, and only then, the door might crack open.

We would be getting waxed in round one but I see four games where the lower-seeded team could get the W.

    OU  could beat Florida
    Indiana could beat Iowa State
    Coastal could beat A&M
    Cincy could beat Georgia

There are quality games to be played with other G5 that would draw a crowd. For example, I was more excited about potentially playing Boise State this season than I was Pitt.

None of this would happen. All of this is conjecture. None of this is even remotely true or likely.

The way it is now...if a P5 loses to a G5 (that they all play every year) their chances of a playoff spot is out the window. What you do in the regular season always has the complete and total bearing on what bowl you go to or if you get into the 4 team playoff.

And yes many years the CUSA champ would have to play the number 1 seed. That is completely fair for the crap schedules we play. Now if we could have held our ranking before rice...we would have gotten a better spot/seed...in a playoff. Want a better seed...play a better schedule and win out.
