  • I’d be fine with giving Ja’Juan Seider a chance.

Regardless, I hope whomever coaches the Herd in 2021 has a sack of balls.

  • A possible reach hire but could turn great, Press Taylor.

I think Byron stays in the NFL and has no reason to come. Chad will most likely decline as well.

Press is an NFL coach. Had recieved credit for the Super Bowl game winning vall. Would be able to develop some great qbs.

May be a risk but I think it may be great.

  • I believe you reach out to Chad and Byron both to gauge interest. If not them I’m going Gus Malzahn.
Still getting lots of $$ from Auburn so might get him cheap for 2 years.

  • Most impressive Coordinator I've seen this year is Marcus Freeman, D Co at University of Cincinnati.  It appears he is always in control, has the highest respect of his players, and the word is he's been very instrumental in recruiting to UC (they're getting more and more kids in OH).

Problem is, unless there is action soon, there will be less to choose from.

I’m sure Hamrick will wait until most are taken.

  • I have no idea if he ever wants to coach at the collegiate level, but if the first call isn’t to Pennington, it’s not a real search.  He’s a leader, a winner and loves Marshall.  And can you imagine the staff he could assemble?  Instant name recognition in households for recruiting and immediately energizes the fan base.

I've always thought that Chad is too beloved by the Marshall community to be the head coach. What does he have to prove? And if he isn't successful, you have the potential to sour that relationship.

  • I not only want a head coach with no ties to Marshall, I want the same for a new AD. The good ol' boy network needs to end at Marshall because it's doing more harm than good.

How about one of the coordinators from North Dakota State? They obviously know how to recruit, run a program, and win. And win a lot.

  • Successful FCS HC who is an offensive guru. That’s the man we need.

No old retreads. G5 or P5 coach with extensive and proven offensive success
My thoughts exactly.  If we lose him in 2 years to  bigger G5 or P5 that's ok too. That means he was a winner here. Doc has been here 11 years and nobody is knocking on his door
Today, I consider myself, the luckiest man on the face of the earth..

  • Out of the box choice but maybe look at Zach Kittley, Houston Baptists offensive coordinator. Spent time under kingsbury at Texas tech and his 3 years at baptist has seen a high powered offensive. We need excitement in the program again and he seems to want to throw the ball. In 4 games this year his QB threw for the same yards with 15 touchdowns and 1 Int, compared to 18 and 9 for wells. We don’t need an old coach from a P5. Give a young up and comer a job for a few years until he moves up.

  • Assuming Hamrick thought this could/would be Doc's last year, he would have a very short list of candidates by now.  The question isn't who we think would make a good candidate, but rather who Hamrick thinks would be a good candidate.

Anybody know him well enough to speculate on who he knows or would target?

  • We all know who the next HC should be.

Hahaha ole D*ckRod! You know what, I’d actually be ok with that hire. Also wouldn’t mind Art Briles either even though he is getting up there in age. Outside of those 2 former HC I agree with everyone that we need a young coach. How about Kendall Briles? He was OC for Kiffen at FAU not that long ago and had some success.

  • I think Lambert would do a great job at Marshall;not that he is my choice.  What he accomplished at UNCC is, IMHO, an outstanding display of being a proactive, community affiliated, solid communicating, program developing specialist.  As I mentioned elsewhere in the last several hours, tion need a re-stage of our whole program.  He is capable of doing it, and the talent he was able to draw to UNCC as a start-up indicates to me he could drive very high level recruiting here too.  With a promotion of J C Price to his DC, and replacing Cramsey (although I like him, there would be too much deficit at the start if not change on the O side of the ball), I think he wins big with the returning talent and has a solid chance at a conference championship in his first year.

While new would be great, if we do have a quality guy in house who already knows the conference, that could be an assist in a quick turnaround of the success on the field and in the pocketbook as well.

Again, not my first choice, but I would sure hope if that happened the fan base would give him 100% of their support.

P.S. Do you think he could drive a higher degree or re-attachment of players from decades past?

  • His defense stunk against UAB for goodness sake.  No thanks.  He lost to D3 teams at Charlotte.  No thank you.  Unfortunately he is considered attached with Holliday.  Had he been with a coach here who won big and moved on it would be a different conversation.  This will not excite fans and keep the program stale.  I think it’s a bad move if it happens.  Form a committee of past greats well connected professionally and let them sort this program out.  I will trust their decision over anyone else.
Moss, pennington, Leftwich, brown, wade etc.  those familiar with today’s type of personality and player.   That’s how it should be done.

  • I have too much admiration for Chad P to want to hire him.

Why do I say that?  College football is a lot different from HS.  And despite the first seven games of this season this program is a hot mess right now.  I wouldn't put him in a situation like that, with no experience as a college coach let alone head coaching it would be like sitting him up to fail and that is not fair.  And, he is happy where he is it seems.

Anybody remember Gerry Faust?  Went from Cincinnati Moeller to Notre Dame?  Not that his private school in Lexington is Moeller or Marshall is Notre Dame, nonetheless I would not put Chad in a similar circumstance.

Leftwich on the other hand is a completely different story but within anything from a year to three years he's probably going to be a head coach in the NFL barring some disaster, and we may be able to persuade him emotionally I doubt we could do so financially.

Just my two cents, reasonable minds may differ.
"On rainy days, the early justices would enliven case conferences with wine. On other days, even if the sun was shining, Chief Justice John Marshall would order wine anyway, saying, 'Our jurisdiction is so vast that it must be raining somewhere.' "

I don't think either would be a good choice. They are football lore here, no need to ruin it.  Peterson, maybe, as he has coached in college as a career and never had the national NFL attention they both did.

  • Guys, a lot of you are being bold, innovative, daring and insightful in some of your answers. Problem is this:  how often has Hamrick exhibited such traits in his coaching selections while at MU, and perhaps elsewhere?  Just don't see it in him.  Oh, and my limited understanding about the D'Antoni hire, that wasn't really Mike's choice but he was basically boxed into a corner and had to select Danny!

  • Alabama(on the most successful run in the history of modern college football) just had to score 52 to win by 6 in the SEC championship game.  All the rules in CFB and the NFL have changed dramatically to favor offense.  And MU has gone w/ defensive coaches during this period for the last 15+yrs.  It's stubborn and stupid.  Get the best offensive minded coach Marshall can afford and get with it.  And as mentioned, the spread is NOT the only offense that can be run.  If it was then we'd see it exclusively in the NFL.

I was so jealous watching Bama and Florida line up in multiple offenses last night. Saw one sequence where the Tide went Power I for a play then into a shotgun spread formation the next only to go under center in a more Pro Style look a few plays later.

    You nailed it

    Does Hamrick get it?

We’ll see. Great hires in soccer and men’s BBall, and Doc has been good just not great. That’s just not good enough after a decade in charge.

    Go Herd!
