  • And WVU gets Tennessee, a 3-6 Tennessee who has lost 5 or 6 in a row!  What a joke!!  The whole bowl season is nothing but a joke this year, including the HERD and its game!

  • Just what MU's deflated football reputation, and fan base, need is for the CUSA champion and Herd conqueror Blazers to get their clock cleaned by an awful, SEC cellar dwelling team like South Carolina!!

  • This is one year I would have been OK skipping a bowl.  Short week to prepare and with 2-8 teams making bowls it is just another game.

Let the players go home to their families for Christmas.

  • It’s a good game for them.  They beat a P5 and get it on their resume.

No one cares if you beat a 2-8 P5 team. Literally no one. And if any program tries to tout a victory over a 2-8 South Carolina then they are part of the problem in college football because that allows the divide between P5 and G5 to widen in the perception of the fans. I just hope to God our conference champion doesnt manage to lose to a 2-8 South Carolina. That will really further the perception that even the worst P5s would be dominant in G5 leagues.

There are Marshall fans who disagree.  We beat a 1-10 South Carolina team and people still talk about it.

I started to post the same thing.  Some fans would rather beat a 2-8 South Carolina team instead of an undefeated and nearly top 10 Coastal Carolina team.  Had we stayed undefeated...a win over an undefeated would have done better.  I would rather play a P5 team in most cases but not a 2-8 South Carolina team that should not be in a bowl while Army is sitting at home.

Especially with Mike BoBo as interim HC; the same Mike BoBo MU defeated when Bobo was HC at Colorado ST....

The win over 2-10 Purdue was probably the most fun I've ever had at the Joan. That game was an absolute blast and easily the most memorable of the season.

At the end of the day, nobody remembers they were 2-8, but they remember they were south carolina.

Now I'll tell you what they don't remember, 11-2 NIU.

This is where our fans never understand schedules. They think we were great this year because we beat EKU and Umass along with CUSA cupcakes. But people have made fun of our win against Clemson in 99 when they were 6-6 in the ACC. They lost to GTech by 3. NCSt by 4 and the national champs Florida St by 3. My point is you could be 0-11 losing by 3 to all top 25 teams and be better than an 11-0 team beating the little sisters of the poor.

How many fans would be talking about that awesome Coastal victory in the barbershop 5 years later? I bet 5 years later people would romanticise that South Carolina win though.

Same goes for recruiting. Would you rather be remembered down the road as the team that knocks off P5 schools when given the chance or the team that one time beat Coastal? Nobody but the big Marshall fan will remember Coastal was ranked (or the game in general) or South Carolina sucked, just who the opponent was. Heck, the casual fan will flip through, see SC is playing and assume they are pretty good without looking into it.

Big difference. They were not 2-10 at the time. They were 0-0.

They were hot garbage the years prior, too: 1-11 in 2013 and 3-9 in 2014. Beating up on a Big 10 team with their 3+ star players and enormous budgets will always be fun, no matter how bad they are.

Losing to even a zero win South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, etc. would have absolutely no impact on our school/conference national perception. The sad reality is nobody outside of Marshall cares at all. I have to tell my sports fan relatives yearly and repeatedly that we aren't in the MAC.

To the casual football fan or the guy that follows SEC/Big10, we are simply that team Randy Moss one time played for, we are located in Ohio and we play in the MAC, which is still FCS, right? They don't know hardly anything accurate about us.

There are a few others.  Appy's upset of Mich (or was it Mich St?) still rings as big time.

I'll use my relative, the casual big conference fan again.... Guarantee if he saw us playing zero win South Carolina and we won, he'd give me a text and say nice I saw you beat South Carolina today. He would not text me to say I saw you beat Coastal today. No it doesn't do anything for overall national perception but at least it would register on someone's radar for two minutes only because South Carolina has some brand power. Brand power means something.

  • South Carolina just backed out, not even entirely covid related. So UAB might be without a bowl game now.
