Marshall's Holliday Named C-USA Coach of the Year
Story LinksDALLAS – After leading his team to an East Division title and a Conference USA Championship Game appearance, Marshall’s Doc Holliday has been named Conference USA Coach of the Year, as voted on by the league’s head coaches.

2020 FB Coach of Year Release.(pdf)

Marshall Football's all-time leader in games coached and wins over FBS opponents, Holliday has led the Thundering Herd to 7-2 record this season, including a 4-1 finish in C-USA play.  Marshall spent much of the regular season in the national rankings, reaching as high as No. 15 in multiple weeks.

Under Holliday’s tutelage, Marshall placed 12 players on the C-USA All-Conference teams, including a league-best nine first team selections.  The Thundering Herd produced the C-USA Defensive Player of the Year in senior LB Tavante Beckett, who averages 9.6 tackles per game, has 7.5 TFL’s, one forced fumble, a nation-leading four fumble recoveries and one touchdown.  Marshall also produced the C-USA Freshman of the Year in QB Grant Wells who has completed 61% of his passes for league-bests of 1,877 passing yards and 18 passing touchdowns (third-most among all FBS freshmen).

Holliday was named the American Football Coaches Association's FBS Region 4 Coach of the Year on Dec. 15.  Region 4 covers all of Conference USA and the Big 12 Conference.  He is a finalist for the AFCA National Coach of the Year.

Holliday has recorded 85 wins at Marshall, including three straight seasons with 10 or more victories from 2013 to 2015. The Thundering Herd went 13-1 in 2014 with a Conference USA title and victory in the Boca Raton Bowl. Holliday has also led Marshall to eight bowl games, winning six of the first seven.  The Herd will seek another bowl victory when it faces Buffalo in the Camellia Bowl in Montgomery, Alabama on Christmas Day.

This marks the second time that Holliday has been named Conference USA Coach of the Year, as he also won the award in 2014 when he led the Herd to a C-USA Championship.  Holliday becomes the fifth coach in C-USA history to win multiple Coach of the Year awards.

Agreed! Coaches vote on CUSA awards. I can see why coaches would vote for Doc, because they hope we don't make a coaching change. CUSA know as long as Doc is coach here, we won't win a CUSA championship.. This is Pathetic!

  • You guys are funny, coaches all have egos and every one of them would want to be named coach of the year.  I want Doc gone but to say the other coaches voted him COY to keep him around is laughable.

dear Doc, please retire, you've had a good run and made a great living.  go out on top in the eyes of your peers.  frankly i admire you're stoic old school nature, it never bothered me 'cause i just want it done on the field and put up in the trophy case, but we just need and want change.  nothin personal

The joke is on us! Being 15th ranked and shut out at home by a team we were a 23 point favorite to win.. Doc doesn't deserve a COY award.. Now that's laughable!

  • This is devastating news. You can bet Hamwreck will use this to try to keep Johnny around. Why would we not do everything in our power to keep the  "coach of the year"? Should have been the UAB coach who took John to school and has been in the CUSA championship game 3 years in a row.

I’m sure Hamrick will be out shortly saying, we are proud to have CUSA COY coming back to what will be an exciting 2021 season. We couldn’t do this without you fans. Go Herd!!!!

  • I'm going to take this as a good sign!

Let's look at the little pieces of evidence that are piling up.

Reports of him selling his farm in Putman county.   Reports of him selling his home in Huntington.

Hasn’t had his contract extended, as far as we know.

This year’s team has been built for this year.

I’m telling myself Doc has decided to ride off into the sunset.  He’s decided to ride off into the sunset and told the insiders he trusts including some other coaches.  This award is just his contemporaries “honoring” one of the longest serving coaches in the league in his last year.

That’s my theory and I’m sticking with it until I hear tragic news to the contrary.

True, but the fact he hasn't announced he is retiring might be a sign they will promote within. The longer you wait to announce the less time people have to demand a National search.

  • Promoting within a program that has not won a cusa title since 04.  Makes 0 sense.  Only at Marshall.

  • I still don't think he would sell or has sold his farm. That place has been in their family for years. He has a son and other family members that likely would want to keep it. That said, it doesn't mean he is or isn't retiring based on what happened with that farm. I just have a suspicion that we'll see him on the sidelines in 2021. I gotta a feeling Cramsey will be here as well.
