The Mountain West was formed in 1999 when the WAC split under similar circumstances, and according to Brown both ODU and Marshall are pushing for that scenario.

Marshall officials declined to comment and their ODU counterparts had not responded to a request at the time of publication, but one high-ranking Marshall employee said on the condition of anonymity it was a possibility being discussed.

  • Some of the C-USA West fans over on the C-USA board are not happy about it.

They have a weird love of this set up the East just doesn't reciprocate. Probably because everything is based around Texas.

Who cares what they think. No way should we be traveling halfway across America with so little TV money. This marriage is beyond repair. A split has to happen.

  • I think the handwriting is on the wall here.  Regardless what happens with the B12 and AAC, CUSA is burnt toast.

I have read through that thread and sheeessshhh. It is like they are scorned lovers that claim they will be better off without us, but deep down know that it is not true haha. All the west schools and the Florida twins are starting to get very nervous.

Remember last month when they canceled in person CUSA media days at the last minute because some East schools did not want to come? Hmmm?..

  • Was reading on one of the other boards that the current Atlantic 10 basketball conference might be considering sponsoring an eastern football conference. Wouldnt that be wild? Would love to see Marshall play hoops in the A-10 and be one of the anchors in a new eastern football conference.

  • I don't like the "make your own fantasy conference" parlor game but if I were making one I'd do this:

    Marshall
    UAB
    Southern Miss
    Louisiana Tech
    FAU
    App St.
    Georgia Southern
    Coastal Carolina
    MTSU
    WKU

Never going to happen but this conference would absolutely gut CUSA and the Sun Belt.

  •  find it ironic that MU has games at Appy in FB, at JMU in soccer, and at home vs Coastal Carolina all before end of Sept. In addition to the money saved on travel, the schools we aren't currently affiliated with know Marshall will bring fans.  The Western teams will be better off as well. They need a regional league as bad as the eastern teams do. And honestly, they have better recruiting territory, so there is nothing that would keep them from being successful with right leadership.

I would hope any new league would adapt a more collective aggressive scheduling philosophy for both FB and BB. Not sure many CUSA teams were ever on board with that. But I would think based on last 2-3 yrs that Coastal, JMU, Appy, and Liberty would all want to do that to raise the leagues profile. A new league would also not require entrance fees.

That would be great , absofreakinglutely great . MU in the A10 in basketball would be a big step up for the Herd , hope it happens.

  • I'm noticing an increasing number of posts mentioning UMass and or Connecticut as possible members of a new conference.

Sorry they just make no sense to me.  Part of the complaints about C-USA is the travel distance and costs.  Huntington to Dallas is a thousand miles and 13-hour drive, Huntington to Mass is 800 miles and 11 hours.  Not much difference and we are the northern most city of the majority of candidates for a new conference.  Culturally UMass and Connecticut are as different from the culture of the proposed new conference as Texas is different from the current eastern C-USA teams.

Just don?t see any logic to including UMass and Connecticut in a new conference intended to resolve the problems related to having such a geographically separated conference as we are in now.

Agreed, the goal is to have a travel friendly, regional league. Don?t need those schools, the Florida twins or anything west of USM, if that. USM identifies more with the La schools and Deep South.
Would like to bring UAB with us to a new league but they may be targets of the AAC.
I would love a new regional, eastern based league. That would be truly best for Marshall?s future. Jmo

If this happens, they are going to be even more upset when the new league?s TV deal smashes what they get.

UConn has an independent TV deal with CBS that?s worth far more than CUSA?s per team deal.  They absolutely, 100%, have value.

  • I have no interest in many A10 schools who have never played D1 FB.

It is interesting that an issue might be that too many quality schools would want to be a part.  I like the alignment initially proposed (mostly east/mostly south), but you might see many eastern based schools showing interest...which is why is would be better if MU is involved in the planning stages.

Umass/Uconn. Umass would be a hard no for me. Uconn is worth considering and a tough to pass up due to BB success, the Hartford market and proximity to NYC. Key is to have teams within geographical footprint with similar goals.
