  • They bring TV money.

Another way of saying they bring markets.  Those who fail to learn from mistakes are doomed to repeat them.  UMass no more brings the Boston market than Rice brought Houston.

  • Any talk of UConn and UMass is usually football only. Not the same as sending every sport up there. I wouldn't mind them for football only. Sure they suck right now but I think there's name identity and value being associated with state flagships. Less confusion and who? like a Middle Tennessee State.

  • Agreed, the goal is to have a travel friendly, regional league. Don?t need those schools, the Florida twins or anything west of USM, if that. USM identifies more with the La schools and Deep South.
Would like to bring UAB with us to a new league but they may be targets of the AAC.
I would love a new regional, eastern based league. That would be truly best for Marshall?s future. Jmo

I believe that UAB would be the first CUSA targeted school by the AAC

  • UConn has an independent TV deal with CBS that?s worth far more than CUSA?s per team deal.  They absolutely, 100%, have value.
I have never watched UConn play other than when they played us in a bowl. Their campus is 15 miles from ESPN HQ. If they were that big of a brand, ESPN would have gobbled them up. More for womens b'ball than football. No to NE schools, doesn't help Marshall.

MUHERD76 is talking about it again in the thread about this news.

    https://csnbbs.com/thread-907913-page-20.html

    He said-
"This is nothing new. I've heard Marshall, ODU, and a few others have been in contact collectively with the A-10 conference about them sponsoring football. Something was supposed to potentially emerge this past spring but Covid and a few other things have thrown a wrench into it. We'll see what happens."

The A10 would be awesome for hoops. And the football side would be no worse than our current arrangement. It would probably be most our current division plus a couple. Not much different except you're out of Texas.

  • They would be getting the mini-me Alabama with UAB.  Way down the line in the hierarchy in Alabama.

    Agreed
ESPN did gobble them up and put their football in the Big East.  But they only had 1 or 2 good years.  Failed experiment.  There is zero need for them in a  new conference.  We should be adding quality teams, not markets.  I'm not sure Charlotte has shown to be quality anything.  Their location is the only thing they have going for them.  I can live with that.  UCONN or UMASS don't even have that.  That's a hard pass on those two.

UMASS couldn't hack the MAC, just another reason to say no to that.

I cringe at every scenario that includes Charlotte.  Yes they bring Soccer, but they aren't the reigning National champs.  Soccer is a side note in all of this.  Not crazy about ODU, but if they are going to carry the reorganization water along with us, then we need them.  Also ODU has ties to JMU.  I've been on the JMU wagon for a long time.

  • No to UMass and UConn is not interested in a conference.  Below would be who I would like to be in a conference with.  I am sure i am leaving out a few options.

    Marshall
    Ohio
    Appy St
    WKU
    Liberty
    UAB
    Coastal Carolina
    James Madison
    FAU
    Georgia Southern

  • I guess the ODU AD is floating the idea of a new league heavily. I like his proactive stance.

It's because financially ODU is drowning in CUSA.

  • I like that ODU is pushing for change.  They were very successful prior to joining CUSA.  There is zero competency in the CUSA office.  I know i dont want our fate in Judy?s hands.  She has been a terrible leader.

The next question, are there any members actually doing well financially, particularly in the CUSA-east?

And if one or more actually are doing OK, is it because of or inspite of CUSA membership?

  • Maybe I am remembering this wrong, but when ODU joined wasn't all the talk about their facilities, huge fan base, and money to compete? Now they can't even find a way to survive in our league. Do we really want to be with them in whatever comes next.

They were winning in football and actually had a waiting list for season tickets prior to joining CUSA?they haven?t won in football and they lost that excitement.  Then on top of that they spent millions to upgrade their football stadium.

It wasn't so much the facilities they had, but the plans to build and that they had the money to carry out those plans.  That and ,ahem, they brought the Norfork market.  Yea UMass and UConn. Sarcasm off now.

Again, they signed a deal with CBS for just their football games that?s far more valuable than what CUSA teams get on a per team basis.

They have a great basketball facility and good tradition. Football has a lot of upside with good fanbase and excitement building. They could still be a good football program in the future. Rich recruiting area and good fanbase. Teams I want out of CUSA,,,ODO, Charlotte, WKU, MTSU, SMiss, UAB.

I?m looking at football AND basketball. Then if we could get James Madison, Liberty, coastal and or Appy st, Georgia Southern etc we could form some real rivalries.

  • although not 100% certain on order of preference-

    1)  A10 football addition of 8 to 12 teams, which could mean any number of configurations for all other sports.  a large conference in BB and most other sports??   i've always liked the idea and similar to many fans i always hoped that if fb isn't/wasn't getting IT done, that BB might be the catalyst that would propel/lead us, by a different route, to better affiliations.  i don't know how we fit academically or otherwise but the regional aspect would be good enough

    2) CUSA east-west split (any number of potential configurations) to maintain NCAA status/post season eligibility and again, the driving force is regionality

  • I don't think you'll ever split any of those Ohio schools out of the MAC.  They have been together since about 1937.  I agree that Toledo, OU and Little Miami would be great additions to some kind of eastern conference.  Maybe Western Michigan and Northern Illinois too.  But you'll never get the Ohio schools to come outta there.  I still think an amalgamation of the sun Belt east and C-USA east would be a better deal -- never can tell, might even get ECU to leave the AAC.

ODU was heavily subsidized by student fees and the state of VA and I believe the state put an end to that practice.

Doesn't seem to have helped their brand nor the chance they get into a league. Not seeing them mentioned in any dialogue.
