  • Penny Hardaway is close to building a basketball empire in Memphis.  He has added Larry Brown and Rasheed Wallace to his coaching staff.  They are marketing Memphis as a stepping stone to the NBA.  With NIL an option now, they could potentially ended up being the second tier landing spot for a lot of one and done guys.  The connections that staff have nationally will be very appealing to recruits over the next few years.  They signed the top center in high school basketball, Jalen Duren for this year and are close to getting Emoni Bates to commit right now.  If he signs with Memphis (that could happen in the next day or two), they will be one of the top 2-3 teams in the country, at least on paper.

    Hahaha.

  • The Herd started open workouts again yesterday. All were there except Toussaint who was getting his physical. We hope to get a look at him at 2 pm Thursday when they get together again in the Rec Center, The Cam is tied up with volleyball.
Next week we are back to 4 times weekly workouts in the Cam. They are set for Mon, Tue, Thus and Friday

We haven't even gotten a look at Toussaint yet but I wanted toss out some names for encouragement to RS. As has been stated on the Board, no one is forced to accept a redshirt but I am thinking McKey or Toussaint maybe should be encouraged to take a RS. Or even someone that has been here awhile. Just some ideas to maybe help build back better in the future.

Maybe Mckey but the word is Toussaint is legit. Will have to wait and see but he may be the missing piece to the puzzle. Can?t wait to see him next week.

  • Or we could get a much needed practice facility.

Yes we could/should. But until the money is raised, maybe the option mentioned would work short term.

I heard Jeff O? Malley on a recent podcast say that two of his priorities are the baseball stadium and the practice facility for basketball.

  • Guys, one issue is that the Volleyball team plays its home matches on the CAM arena floor.

They open up their season THIS Friday with their MU Invitational tournament.  Little Miami, Austin "Lets Go" Peay, and the "Mighty" Crimson Tide of Alabama, sans Nick Saban, are in town for Friday and Saturday matches!  Herd hosts Bama at "prime time", 6:00 pm Friday, and play Peay and the "Deadskins" on Saturday, late morning and afternoon.

No way is Marshall going to make its Volleyball team hosts home matches in the Gullickson gym, at least as presently configured.   That would be even below Mountain East standards, IMO.  Not sure if the visiting teams for the tourney get into town on Thursday and get to practice in the CAM prior to tourney play.  But I can see why its use is limited for 2 or 3 days this week.

Now, I, too, heard Jeff O'Malley's comments and he sincerely sounded like he wanted to get some movement going quickly on the Gullickson renovations, etc.  I know President Gilbert is really pushing to get the Brad Smith business building under construction on 4th Avenue before he departs next summer.  Believe there is movement underway to rekindle the fundraising for the baseball facility, Gullickson and CAM renovations, etc., this fall.  Hopefully there will be some public announcement(s) forthcoming.  All dependent, I'm sure, on how severe the recurrent COVID virus and variations outbreaks are in the upcoming days and weeks.

Yes, today, Thursday, the Cam is busy all day with the visiting teams practice. Thus the basketball team in the Rec at 2pm. I hope to get my first look at Toussaint

The suggestion was that the volleyball team PRACTICE in the Cam, not play games there. Between the Cam, Gullickson, The Rec, and possibly a newly remodeled auxiliary gym, there should be plenty of space for teams to practice until a basketball only facility can be built, if ever. jmo

Those places are no ideal if you are trying to grow programs. That is how you get left behind while others build them. Gullickson is awful, the rec center is well, a rec center with a bunch of noise from students running around everywhere playing pickup games etc,,, I even saw how upset Herrion was once when they were preparing for the CuSA tournament and had to leave the floor at the CAM.

I know it's not ideal Bust, and we all want the best facilities we can get. But until we have the funds for a practice facility or Mike D and Brad Smith decide to donate funds to build one, we have to improvise. I think a re-done auxiliary gym would be a great step in that direction. Not to slight the band and the hard work they put in, but surely there is room in the old science building that they could use and likely have more space. jmo

    TRS
    MU 71

I'll say one thing, TRS.  If MU spent ANY significant $$$$ in the remediation and site preparation at the proposed baseball park location, then they need to approach the City on recouping said funds.  I'm talking about all the so called relocation of utilities, lines, sewer and water lines, and perhaps any haz mat clean up costs.  If the City government and the Williams administration cannot figure how to use all that proposed, and perhaps passed, COVID money that the federal government is throwing at City, County and State Governments, including for INFRASTRUCTURE, then they need to resign.  Perhaps Gov. Justice, the Higher Ed Policy Commission, and the MU President and BOG, should just bypass the City Hall bunch and go directly to someone, say Senator Manchin, in the Federal Government while he is in effect in the "Catbird" seat in DC when it comes to votes on some key pending legislation.

If MU spent hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, on any work thus far at the baseball which falls under the above description, if Sen. Manchin can pull some strings, where perhaps the people in City hall can't or won't try to do, and let some of those expended monies by MU be reimbursed with Federal COVID funds, then MU can surely plow said money back into the Stadium construction costs itself.

Worth a try, IMO, to help spur this vital project on to construction and eventually completion.

Agreed but when you look at that property with the exception of an old warehouse being torn down, I don't see anything they may have spent money on exception the rental of a construction fence

  • You basketball first guys, please don't jump my bones on these questions, I mean them sincerely and to gain information.

If lighting and some paint was added to Gullickson would it matter enough to help gratify somewhat for a practice facility?

Are dressing rooms needed in Gullickson to make it acceptable?

Is the current floor adequate, or would a new floor be needed in Gullickson to make it acceptable?

If women's basketball was abandoned entirely, would that significantly help the men's program?  Let's face it, volleyball isn't going anywhere.

Has there ever been a separate fund raising effort to get a few hundred thousand dollars for Gullickson, and if so, what was the outcome?

And finally, is DD the type of guy who can be motivated by baby steps of improvement, or must it all be All or Nothing with him?

    Thanks, whf

  • I am of the opinion that a small scale renovation to Gullickson could be a temporary fix as long as the ultimate goal of complete overhaul was not abandoned.  The gym would need to be equipped with new Heat and Air and new flooring.  Fresh paint and scoreboards would also be necessary as well as likely 6 portable baskets.  There might need to be some changes made to the entry to limit access to the general student population.  A renovation such as this would still be costly (my guess would be in the $250,000 range) and I am not certain the university would want to spend that much money on a band-aid but it might buy some time and address a pretty serious need in the program.
