  • Hello Herd Fans!

I will be making my first ever trip up to Huntington this weekend.  A game at Marshall has always been on my list of things to do, so I'm really excited about it!

Where is the best place for me and my small group of Pirates to park and tailgate?  I'm unfamiliar with Huntington, aside from Google Maps.

We MIGHT get out there at 12 and tailgate for 6 hours like we would in Greenville, but if we decide to watch a 12:00 game in a bar somewhere near the stadium, do y'all have any suggestions on places near the Joan with good food and beer?

I do plan on making a stop by Tudor's for a biscuit on Saturday morning... I've had lots of Herd fans tell me I have to go there.  Done and done.

I've been going to ECU games since 2002, so I've seen every ECU/Marshall game since then in Greenville... my last memory of Marshall is Cato carving us up, and spanking one of Coach Ruff's last Pirate teams that we thought was pretty good.

Looking forward to it!  Lots of history between our schools.

  • I think Calamity J's has better food, but Fat Patty's is right beside the stadium, has a better atmosphere, and still has good food imo.

Please come back after the game to give us an update on your experience in Huntington. Marshall fans take pride in being very nice to visiting fans.

Also, I'm sure some Marshall fans will have some games on at their tailgates. I'm sure they would let you all watch and tailgate with them if you wanted.

  • Fat Patty?s is way overrated. Calamity J is great, the Peddler or Backyard Pizza. MU Hall of Fame Cafe or Black Sheep Burritos is good as well.

    Not sure about tailgate areas.

Safe travels and enjoy the game.

  • Honestly, the whole area around the stadium is a tailgate and you will be welcome at most of them.

I agree with all of this. I just assumed they wanted something close to the stadium/tailgating.

Marshall HOF Cafe is a must visit imo. I think every college should have one of these.

The Bahnhof on 8th St & 7th Ave does a great Sunday brunch.

  • A lot of people are recommending things that I wouldn't consider close to the stadium.  While some of them are good options, your best bets near the stadium to watch a game would be The Inn Between, Fat Patty's, or Giovanni's Pizza.

    Yes for sure!

Actually, those are the ONLY places that are close and within walking distance to the stadium/tailgating.

Fat Patty's is a typical sports bar. Wings, burgers, etc. Giovanni's is more of a pizza and italian subs type of place. I've never been to The Inn Between so I can't comment on that.

Exactly, one of those three if you want to catch a game on TV while still having a beer NEAR the stadium and main tailgate areas.  All have adequate food choices as well if you need a bite.

For parking/tailgating I suggest Logan meatpacking.  It's 10 bucks and lots of available parking 2 blocks from stadium and allows tailgating.  The entrance is at the end of 21st street off 3rd avenue.  Easy walk up to said restaurants and main West lot of the stadium where everyone gathers.

  • Welcome ECU fans -- we've always had a special bond.  Very classy gesture about the memorial on the visitor's dressing room at Dowdy-Ficklen, where our boys spent their last hours before flying off to eternity.  Luv to be in the same conference with you -- whether it be  the AAC or let's all go to the Sun Belt.  The Union, downtown and on 4th Ave., is the best college bar.

  • If you have extra time you may also want to see the Memorial fountain, which is behind the Student Union on 5th Avenue and would also put you on one of the main quads on campus.  You can walk there from the stadium and it's easier and nicer to walk through campus rather than on 5th Avenue.

A short drive up 20th Street, which is the street bordering the west side of the stadium, will take you to the cemetery where the plane crash memorial is and where several players are buried.

If you don't want to tailgate for 6 hours, the Marshall Hall of Fame Cafe has a lot of TVs.  You could eat lunch there, then tailgate for 3 to 4 hours around the stadium.

Safe travels.  Games at ECU have been some of my favorite away games.  Hope you find that as well in Huntington.

Oh, I'm not expecting to win.  I really HOPE that we do, but nothing that I have seen the first 2 games leads me to believe that we'll be able to muster ANYTHING on offense.  Our D would good enough to win games, if we had a decent O.  Unfortunately, we can't seem to figure it out.

We are a team that will suck for weeks and then have a game with 500-600 yards of offense... and then suck for weeks.

Either way, I'm excited to come visit... and I hope we end up in a conference together again someday!

Honestly, we aren't sure what to expect from Marshall either. We have played two terrible teams so far. At times, we have looked like a Top 25 team. At others, we have looked like a struggling G5 team who will win 6-8 games.

It will really depend on whether we take care of the ball or not imo. We are capable of having 3-4 turnovers for no reason. We are capable of putting up 600 yards and 50 points....we aren't sure what to expect either.

  •   My crew tailgates in the Arbys parking lot across from McDonalds which sits right behind the stadium and your are more than welcome to come join us for some cold barley and hops or whatever shot has been made up for this game lol. Should be plenty of food to go around as well. Look for a couple tents up in the back of the lot which is where we are located with 10 spots.
One of the guys we tailgate with works for Marshall and the building he works in is just down the alley from our tailgate and there will probably be some spots there to park as well.
If you do come by our tailgate ask for Rick or Mike and we will hook you up with some beverages.

Look forward to meeting ya and hope you have a great trip and you will never be treated better as a visiting fan anywhere in this country than coming to a HERD game. GO HERD and hope to see ya !

Captain Ds is not allowing tailgating this year again which is why we moved to Arbys this year. Our crew had tailgated there for around 12 years or so till covid.

I'm in the minority maybe on here, however I think the game will be very close.

I tailgated there last week, but they must have technically been Arby's spots. Closer to the Captain Ds  building though.
