  • Although the kid is labeled as a freshman, it?s his 3rd year here.  He?s really a junior or at least a redshirt sophomore.  And while the young man can sling it and put up some pretty impressive ?yardage stats? he can?t throw 5 picks in 3 games.  One pass he looks like Aaron Rogers and the next pass he looks like  a high school QB.   Most of his picks are not from a lack of accuracy but from bad decisions and forced throws.  I?m still not sure if he is the answer the next 3 years.  I?m guessing Zamora, Harris and Pennington really push him next spring.  I?m pulling for Grant.   He?s a WV kid and seems like a great young man.  Have to protect the football and stop deciding where he?s going with the ball before the ball is snapped.

Agreed about it all being about his poor decisions. If he would just take what the defense gives him then he could be a legit Heisman Finalist in the future. If he keeps throwing in to double and triple coverage then he will finish his career in the WVIAC.

  • He?s got a lot of talent. He has the potential to play on Sundays. Every time this team loses fans feel the need to back up the truck and keep running over people. Bad coaching is what lost that game. But it was one game. With that crappy schedule they weren?t going to a NYD bowl even if they were undefeated. This team will win 9-10 games and Wells will have a great year.

Coaches don?t fumble the ball as they are heading into the end zone (gammage did though).  Coaches don?t miss easy field goals (andrews did though).  Coaches don?t force throws into double coverage (Wells did and it ended the game).  Coaches don?t misplay an onsides kick (our special teams did though).  I agree the coaching was suspect at several critical moments (I kick the field goal when it?s 4th and 2 instead of calling that low % throw we ran).  As Huff said in his post game presser, players have to make plays.  We pooped in our pants about 6 times in the 4th quarter. We should have won that game last night with a score of like 52-24.   That?s what makes this loss so hard to take.

  • Wells is physically talented but needs to see the field better.  Right before the pick Gammage was all alone in the right side of the end zone.  Film study should help this.  App St will give us a good indication of if we are going to be good.8

  • I believe he lacks the mental fortitude to succeed at the level we need him to. Just look at his mental breakdown last year as evidence. I'm rooting for him and hope he can get it together but as of now he will be a liability in close/big games.

I agree with this. I don't want to break in another freshman QB. We need a starter with some experience to bridge the gap until Huff's recruit is ready.

For the most part, we didn?t have a play calling problem.  We had an execution problem.  Huff even admitted as much.

I know. If Wells had connected on all those long bombs we would have won 75-21 instead just the two measly touchdowns we would have won by if they?d taken some time off the clock.

  • Our defensive backs are too small and can only cover 1/2 of a second. That?s what lost the game. Throw after throw after throw with guys wide open. We will be exploited with quick throws the rest of the year. Go out and recritsome defensive backs that have some size and can run.

Nobody is expecting Wells to hit every deep pass.  But most of us expect Gammage to secure the ball as he?s heading in to the end zone.  And most expect a D1 kicker to make a 31 yd field goal.  And I think expecting us to recover an onsides kick is reasonable.  And expecting a few pass break ups and tighter coverage in the secondary wouldn?t be asking a lot either.  But you can stay salty about play calling if it makes you feel better about the loss.  Frankly, it was a collective loss on everyone involved.

The onside kick was very troubling...worse that we didn't execute and ECU did is the fact it appears that our players don't even know the rules around the onside kick, that is on the coaches if you ask me.  clearly on them.

  • The onside kick really irked me too. That's 100% on the coaches. For everything else, if any one of the dozen things that went wrong didn't happen, it would have a been a W.

For how long they were out there, I think the defense looked great for the first 3 quarters. There was a lot of pressure and the ECU QB was constantly on his back. They were just completely gassed by the end. The big downside of the whole "all gas, no brakes" offense that cranks out quick drives and plays in < 20 seconds is what we saw on Saturday. The Herd found itself in a situation where it couldn't score and a defense that couldn't stop the other team.

I feel like Doc-ball was a direct response to these types of games. We all know Doc would have sat on the lead, chewed clock, and attempted to punt ECU into bad field positions. It may have even been the right decision, I don't know. Maybe Huff will have to reevaluate his policy of playing up-tempo until the clock says 0:00.

I still "trust the system" (or whatever Huff says) but I'm definitely feeling nervous about a Cato-style offense without Cato & Shu.

Doc would have never been in that position. After 10 points he would have shut down the offense and tried to play keep away.

  • For the record??I really like Grant.  I just think he's a few minor improvements/developments from being a top 20 in the country QB.  This is his 3rd year with Cramsey and if he can get past the forced throws and the inopportune turnovers, he can be a special player.  If he fails to improve over the course of this season, I think the freshmen push him next year for some of his snaps.  If he improves (and I believe he can) it's his job until he leaves.  At least with Jimmy Skinner we knew what to expect each week.  One week Grant looks like a cross between Stan Hill and Chad and the next he looks like a rookie.  I'm still bullish on Grant and Huff.

  • What's wrong the Wells forcing a few balls.  Push it down field and be a little aggressive.   Wells through a lot of nice balls vs ECU.  The ball he through in double coverage resulting in the INT in the first half ...if I was Wells I would be a little mad at the receiver who gave a poor effort.  Can't remember who the receiver was but he fell down behind the play.  Dude needs to high point that ball and at very least knock it down.

  • IMO, problem is not only Wells.  To me it looks like our passing game greatly overemphasizes too many out pass patterns to the sidelines.  Where in the hell are any slant patterns?  Seam patterns?  Post patterns?  Hell we seem to throw to 20 per cent of the field constantly and leave the other 80% abandoned.  I though this was all on Doc, but now I am no so sure.  Maybe its all Cramsey's design, plan, etc.  I just wonder if perhaps if Wells isn't really 6'1" tall as listed, or maybe a little shorter in reality.  Could having difficulty looking straight down the field due to problems seeing over linemen in front of him be one reason for so many throws to the sideline?  Just wondering.

I just thing ECU used a lot more of the overall field in their passing routes, attack, etc.  Just know our DBs seemed to have a lot more difficulty covering their receivers, seemed tentative, played off too much, etc.  Just throwing this out as some observations, thoughts on what I saw Saturday evening.
