  • I know this presser was already posted.  But for those folks who say Huff?s coaching led to our loss, please watch from the 11:30 mark until 13:00.  He certainly takes responsibility for what happened.  As he called it, it?s a team loss.  But I saw folks saying we weren?t ready for an onsides kick.  You?re right!  We were ready for 3 different ones.  We have not seen accountability like this for ages.  It?s refreshing.  Blame him all you want.  It?s about execution.  Always has been.  Execution and preparation.  I like our chances of getting back to national respectability with Coach Charles Huff.

Dig heels in at nine is not great imo because if it is iffy whether it makes it 10 yds it can freeze player (which is what seemed to happen). Unless you're sure it won't go 10, attack the football like a fumble. Not like it took a crazy bounce. Guy next to player attacking ball should drill 1st ECU player closest to ball.  Just a different philosophy that takes away ambiguity.

  • I admit it has been 56 years, but I remember being taught that the guy closest to the ball goes for it about five yards from him, and the players to his immediate right and left are to cover him and the ball if it gets out.  Guess the 9 yard rule thing is a bit different than I've ever heard before.

A good on-side kicker knows which player he is kicking the ball at, and the players beside him do too. So the offense must act fast to offset that advantage.

Oh well, 66 was a long time ago. And since Hurricane didn't win often back then, there were few times we actually got to have an on-side kick made to us (hehe).

I believe the 10 yard rule applies only to the kicking team.  The receiving team can go after the ball, pick it up, fall on it, etc., anywhere once it is actually kicked.  If the kicking team touches it before it goes 10 yards it is a dead ball and a penalty on the kicking team, IIRC.  Believe the receiving team then gets the ball at a designated spot on the field.  Maybe be wrong about the last sentence, but pretty sure that this is generally correct.

That's what everyone in America teaches as well as executes. Our guys didn't execute in the moment. That doesn't mean that everyone in the country is wrong. Had it taken a big hop then he could have attacked the ball early. The fact it was a slow roller was what made him hesitate.

  • Everyone is not taught the same.  ECU didn?t kick the high bouncer, they did the slow roll.  We should have covered the ball as ECU could not have attacked the recoverer.

Good to see Huff planned for 3 different kicks, just that it is a dangerous way to risk recovery.

The receiving team doesn?t have to wait until it goes 10 yards.  Not sure I understand your position on that one.

  • His heels were dug in 11 yards from the ball.  It's like he was waiting for it to get 10 yards before he touched it and at that point he was fighting 4 ECU players.

  • The problem with attacking the ball before it gets ten yards is that if you don't catch it cleanly it likely bounces back toward the kicking team.  Once the receiving team touches it is a live ball, I believe.

Question for those who know the rules - can the receiving team block before the ball is touched or goes ten yards?  I don't think so, but not sure.
