THIS is why Marshall hasn't accepted the SBC invite yet. You guys are fooling yourselves if you think the eastern based G5 conference is off the table. I know that scares the western programs as a merger of CUSA East and SBC East would be one of the Top G5 conference every year.

It's only equal if the money is equal.  Revenue for the member schools, conference related expenses such as travel and conference administrative costs, exposure, and bowls and bowl revenue are the same.  Otherwise, they are not the same thing.

If done properly a merger between CUSA and the SunBelt could result in a very strong and competitive conference in football and basketball.  It could put CUSA/SunBelt on equal or better footing than the AAC or MWC.  But it will have to result in both more revenue and cost savings for all or most schools involved.

On another positive note, there would only be a need for one conference CEO this would be a good opportunity for Judy to find another job elsewhere or another job within the conference better suited to her abilities whatever they may be.

  • Problem is you'd have one side of league incongruent with the other side. Much like CUSA, a group a schools you have nothing in common with would each have a vote to counter anything your side would deem as beneficial.  New league would not have that issue as schools would already have tremendous congruity.  TV only concerned about marquee matchups.  We would have all of them in new league for FB without having to play the southern group at all. A 10 team new league would allow 9 conf games (play everyone every year), and one basketball division (18 league games per yr)

  • A true merger would be dumb. 20 something schools going from 2 NCAA bids to 1.

I should have said this better... I see an alliance as essentially the same thing and therefore a merger is unnecessary. You still get the eastern based schedule without the headaches of moving all the pieces around. Also keep the two bids as said above by MU96

They won't announce until the contracts have been signed. I'm sure that takes time. It's likely a done deal just not a legally done deal yet.

  • Until ESPN says each team gets $_______ and the vast majority of the teams are happy with it, there is zero chance of a merger.

There is still too much disparity in value even at the CUSA/Belt level.  We are worth exponentially more than Louisiana Monroe.

Or so we would like to believe. Are we as really good/ in demand as we think we are? I would hope so.

  • Some kind of geographic reshuffling would make a lot of sense.

But western schools and whoever gets stuck with the C-USA media deal would have a lot to lose. I imagine there would be a lot of no votes there. A true merger would be highly dependent on the # of NCAA tournament bids. That's ultimately what derailed the C-USA/MWC merger and is too many schools competing for a single bid.

The Sun Belt also seems to be content at where it is. I'm not convinced there's much incentive to merge or align with C-USA when they could potentially loot a few members and not deal with the dead weight, which they have enough of already.

Look at the viewership numbers.  Yes, we are the best draw out there that is not in an ESPN conference.

  • CUSA media deal only has one year left so that's not a big deal. That media deal would be over before any official changes took place.

In a word, there's not much motivation for the SBC to do more than cherry pick the CUSA.

What makes anyone think that for the first time in history, the SBC can poach CUSA teams?

    96, Let's give 129 some credit.
His eastern conference would be more attractive in a lot of ways than us joining the SBC. But, it's not going to happen because while 10 of 14 teams in CUSA want out, probably 80 percent of the SB is happy where they are.

Also, he had maybe the best line regarding the ECU loss: The Herd looked like a top 25 team and a bottom 25 team in the same game.

But he doesn't exactly get numbers.

  • It?s about to go down I?m just not sure what the best idea is 🤷‍♂️ Chances are the power5 schools will be governing the new NCAA according to USAtoday, I?m not sure the American will be a viable conference at all.

    Current SBC > Current CUSA

CUSA without the Texas teams > Current SBC
