  • Can't remember the name for sure but back in the late 60's & early 70's wasn't there a place called the white pantry or something like that. They were open 24 hrs. per day. Seems like they had booths & a long counter. I only ate there once or twice but it was very good.

I saw a presentation years ago on the civil rights movement in West Virginia and the history of that place is kind of crazy. It was segregated well past the point where it was legal or culturally acceptable in most places. A black Marshall student was poisoned and others had the sh*t kicked out of them, including a beating with a cattle prod, for trying to eat there. There were all kinds of sit-ins and protests.

  • As others have said, Oscars is really good. Huntington Ale House, Black Sheep, Backyard, and Bahnhof all have excellent brunch options. Though, you'd have to check hours since I think it might be a Sunday only thing at a few of those places.

Jason, the owner, was a regular on this board for years. Went by the username Examinate. You won?t find a better guy.

Also, complaining about service but praising Shonet?s in the same breath is comical. Shonet?s could not be any slower than they are. On multiple occasions I?ve ordered takeout from Shonet?s, been told an hour plus for pickup, show up to get the food only to be informed they didn?t have half of what I ordered available.

  • LOL at the chain recommendations! That's like someone asking where's the coolest place to shop in Huntington and answering Walmart.

  • Huntington is becoming a foodie town. Lots of great local places. I have to say Calamity J's is the one I like the most. I enjoy just about everything on their menu. MU Hall of Fame salad is always a go to as well. ha!

I really liked Jewel City but since the owner passed away, the quality has gone down hill. Either that or they have some new cooks who aren't the best. jmo

I've found both Fat Pattys and Oscars burgers to be very overrated.

That may not have been the name of what I am thinking.....that's been a long time ago for sure. I just know the food was good. I don't EVER remember anything rachial while I was a MU.

No offense but if it doesn't directly affect you it's really easy to not remember it or say it doesn't happen. I'm in my 30s and my wife is black, and I can tell you 5 times this year when someone has made a racial statement or treated us/our kids differently.

Jason used to be the president of Ona Little League way back in the day when I coached softball there. He was a very fair and hard working guy that I thought held the best interest of the kids. He didn?t have the full beard look back then. I haven?t been around him in years, but have seen him in Oscars. I really love Oscars and their chili is my favorite (another subjective food item). I can?t wait to try his new place? The Corner: Hoagies and Hops? https://thecornerhh.com/

  • To whf, the original poster. We have a pretty solid breakfast at Oscar's regardless of what Mr. Ty Work says about us. We didn't become as popular as we are by accident. If you don't mind an owner that is apparently greasy (I've never been called that), I would be happy to treat you and your family to breakfast. It's on me. Just ask for Jason. If I'm not there, just show the server this post.

Also, if you choose not to dine with us, that's cool, but please skip the chain restaurants and hit a local independent restaurant.

  • Don't get the diss towards Oscars. I've had breakfast there several times and never been disappointed. Cool place with a roll n roll theme. I would suggest trying it out and judging for yourself.

it's excellent!!  I've never had a bad breakfast item or lunch item there.

It's becoming a bit of a tradition where a few of us from the Kanawha valley hit oscars on our way into Huntington for football games.  Start the day with a great breakfast and a tasty IPA before going to the lot to set up tailgate.

whf....please PM me if you aren't going to take Jason up on his offer.  I'll print his post and use it this weekend.   ;D ;D ;D

  • Bob Evans on 16th St. I go there every Sunday morning. I have tried every one in the Huntington-Barboursville area. Now if you want to drive to Milton then Shonet's tops them all for breakfast, lunch and dinner

I'm not a fan of anything at Oscar's. I've never had good service and the food is just ok. Some greasy looking guy who must be the manager is always there. Doesn't make the food look to appealing

I agree with you about Bob Evans on Hal Greer Blvd. Everyone has their very own preferences and I just happened to like B.E. Some on here swear by Tudors, as for Oscars, I've never been there so I can't make a comment about their restaurant. However, I do agree it doesn't hurt to support local restaurants either... I'll have to check out Oscars someday.
