  • Kinda odd that the men couldn?t play any neutral events but the some. Are playing in one in Las Vegas this year. The women are playing Oakland and Akron in December out in Vegas.  Good for them in figuring out how to do that.

I don?t know when it was scheduled but the women?s tourney was announced in September after Hamrick was gone. Going off memory, so someone can correct but I believe the men?s tourneys were all filled by July when O?Malley took over.

  • Ahhh, Marshall fans?when we have 2x or more board participation after a loss compared to a win. Same ol?, same ol?.bench this guy, fire that guy.  You know what is sad? Fan support.  The crowds for all sports are not good?and basically a non-existent student section.

Why did we lose to Campbell? Solid, experienced team but we should have beat them. The first half, we took way too many quick shots instead of moving the ball around and getting to the basket or open 3?s.  Coaching fixed that and we came back in the 2nd half.  We lost because our PG played 38 minutes and scored 10 points and our NBA bound star played 37 and scored 10. They combined 10-30 and 0-7 from 3. This one is pretty simple to figure out.  The best players have to come through and they didn?t.  I?m not that worried about it but AT?s shot is way off right now and we?ll struggle until it?s fixed.

  • Not sure how this could even be brought up as a topic. Danny is the best thing to happen to Marshall basketball in a long time. Danny loves Marshall and most everyone loves him. As far as I'm concerned, Danny can stay here as long as he wants. Love his style of play and passion for The Herd.

That Campbell team is decent. We should have won but got off to a cold start and they were good enough to beat us.

I like Danny as well. He's the kinder, more open, funnier version of Doc. Consistent, and will have a big W on occasion. But also has brain fart losses and its mostly due to coaching. I was sort of disappointed that he threw the kids under the bus in todays HD saying we didn't shoot well and something else. But he didn't say he made the wrong substitutions, didn't have the right line up in at times or failed to call a timeout at crucial times. Own it.

Let's move on, learn from this and get better. Lots of b'ball left.

  • Agreed. The AD. Both the old AD and the present one have forbidden us playing in a neutral site tournament. They insist we play in an exempt event each year like this one. We get 3 home games vs Campbell, Jackson State and Louisiana and then a money game at Indiana. They want the MONEY, not the chance to grow the program with a quality win. Danny is already lobbying for a spot in the Myrtle Beach tournament next year.

I thought someone on here said O'Malley was much more b'ball friendly than Hamrick was? And we don't have the worst arena in the league as 24 said, that's total BS.

Hopefully the AD promotes Herd Rises a bit in the coming year and we get the funding needed for all the projects.

  • People need to realize some things about basketball.

    1. We have the worst facilities in the conference.

    2. We have the worst travel in the conference for our kids

    3. We probably have the lowest support as a basketball program in the conference, see 1 & 2.

    4. We play in a much more competitive league in basketball than football which is the lynch pin comparison. Cusa basketball doesn't get credit for it, but there are 4-5 top 100 teams in cusa we are competing with, this would be like having 4-5 top 40 football teams in cusa to beat for the title every year.

With our facilities and weaknesses, you can't except 30 win seasona here. It's never been done. We have been to the tournament once in the last 40 years basically. We have won one tournament game in ncaa history and won 1 post season tournament in the last 70 years, and won a conference title once in the last 40 years.

Why does Dan get some rope? Because he accomplished all of thise 1 in the last "x" years I mentioned and our only tournament win. He does this in spite of having advantages other schools have over us. 20 wins in basketball is like 8 wins in football. But if you take into account the competition difference, the funding and facility differences, its the equivalent of 10 win football seasons.

Danny is the best coach Marshall has had in my lifetime. We'll compete for another cusa title this season, as well, and thats a hell of an accomplishment in cusa for our basketball program.

Give us an updated/new arena to sell, a practice facility, bring our travel up for away games to match our peers, then we can talk about winning the title every year as our measuring stick.

This is hyperbole, at best.  Please...

  • Some of you were worried about the miniscule difference in conference strength in the Belt and CUSA (flimsy to begin with and isn't going to hold up, anyway). Now, the same dudes, are totally OK with losing to Campbell at home.  Something doesn't add up.

Fans rightly lose our minds when we BARELY lose football games to peer schools.  Losing to Campbell at home is an embarrassment, and should generate the same reaction.

Yet again, this is the same team we always have.  Also, yet again, nice call from the practice report guys.  Your track record is flawlessly always wrong.

Figuring it out? No....they are getting rewarded because no one pays to come watch them play. The men's team is being punished because they actually sell tickets.

As for the attendance. Like it or not, but COVID is still playing a factor and the liberal mask mandates in the arena are also playing a factor whether it's enforced or not.

Losing to Campbell at home will not grow the program.  What makes you think we could pick up a quality win at a neutral site if we can?t beat Campbell at home?

Wait - winning 20 games in CUSA basketball is like winning 10 games in CUSA football?  That?s hard to believe since in 18-19 year 8 of the 14 teams in the conference won at least 20 games.   How many years have we had when multiple football teams win 10 games?

What does football have to do with comparing mens and womens basketball?

I also NEVER said we would wouldn't go to the Sun Belt. I said we wouldn't go to the sun belt without other CUSA East teams and I was right. I was also the very first person on all the message boards to say that Marshall/ODU/JMU we were working together to potentially join the SBC.

  • I for one have always liked Dan, however I am definitely getting tired of a few things in the program.

    1) We are a big and slow team yet we refuse to play a zone defense because Dan thinks he?s in the NBA.
    2) Dan refuses to recruit a guard that get to rim off the dribble which is what this offense needs to be successful. Overall lack of quickness by our guards
    3) The lack of in game adjustments defensively or in this game offensively.  When you are shooting 10% from 3 at some point the coach needs to demand the ball be taken to the hole.
    4) Lack of defensive fundamentals.  Our perimeter defense is continually getting blown by forcing our defense to scramble leaving wide open shooters.

Those 4 things have cost Dan more wins than he will ever admit.

We're 8th out of 13 teams reported in both sports.  It's bottom half, sure, but not the bottom or even bottom 1/3.  It's a bit of a pushback against a comment earlier in this thread that we have the lowest support in the conference.  And a general pushback to the idea that football is being showered with cash while basketball is pinching pennies.

I'll even add to that that we are closer in terms of the total dollars spent to the highest basketball spender (UTEP) than the bottom 3 spenders (FAU, FIU, and Southern Miss) are to us.

  • It's been interesting to see the responses. While D'Antoni gave the basketball program a spark, that flame is starting to die down a little. Yes, I know there are people still worried about Covid. And, there are some who will not wear a mask, even though it is not being enforced. Just was wondering how long we give a "Son Of Marshall" before his seat gets warm.

Problem with math.  Winning 20 games in basketball is a 66% winning percentage, winning 10 games in football is 83% winning percentage.  I laid out the facts many times. DD has a worse win percentage than Doc but was not taking any heat.  He is retired and collecting a pay check.
