  • If Dan wasn't from Mullens and played for Marshall, most of you would be trying to run him out of town on a rail.  He's had time.  It's not working.  It's time to give him a gold watch and a pension.

I graduated with Mike and knew Danny from growing up in Mullens and they are a very good family. Lewis D'Antoni was my hs principle.......now having said that, Danny is NOT producing at the level that he should and that many of us (including me!!!) expect. Overall we have had a very weak schedule since he has been at MU. We have lost "tons of players" (for whatever reason) since he has been here. If we don't win CUSA and at least advance to the NIT at minimum (bur preferably NCAA) then I say it is time for Mr. Smith to remember (and I am sure he does.....) that this is a business decision.

  • Wait - winning 20 games in CUSA basketball is like winning 10 games in CUSA football?  That?s hard to believe since in 18-19 year 8 of the 14 teams in the conference won at least 20 games.   How many years have we had when multiple football teams win 10 games?

If you can?t make your point without being absurd, your point is absurd.

I know it takes some reading comprehension skills to understand, but adjusting for the lack of facilities, funding, and advantages football has over basketball, along with putrid competition in football, yes, 20 games in basketball is equivalent to 10 in football

Clown math you are using.  Basketball has had it just as easy.  DD has a worse winning percentage and has not even won the conference regular season 1 time.

  • We're 8th out of 13 teams reported in both sports.  It's bottom half, sure, but not the bottom or even bottom 1/3.  It's a bit of a pushback against a comment earlier in this thread that we have the lowest support in the conference.  And a general pushback to the idea that football is being showered with cash while basketball is pinching pennies.

Lol but basketball plays actual competition, not the worst in the nation for 2/3 of their schedule

  • Saying that we don't have this, and don't have that only goes so far.

Since DD has been our HC, I believe fan attendance at MU Men's basketball games ranks fairly high in CUSA.  Except for UTEP and perhaps UAB, I believe Herd attendance matches up fairly well against what the other CUSA schools draw.  Even this season, where so far we're drawing a little over 4,000 fans a game, I believe we're probably in the top third to half among all CUSA schools.  Yes, COVID Pandemic and related restrictions, health requirements, etc., are a negative factor, . . . for EVERYBODY and every school.  Still a decent core of die hard Herd Fans at the CAM for every game.  However, losses to the likes of Campbell certainly can't help in the attendance department.  And Danny needs to seriously realize that, and not just shrug, chuckle and almost flippantly dismiss it!!  Casually stating that we'll get better and better without any specifics is, IMO, getting pretty close to the Tan Man's "We've got to get that fixed" territory!

We have been just behind ODU as the #2 basketball attendance in virtually every year he has been here. WKU is usually #3.

  • Agreed. The AD. Both the old AD and the present one have forbidden us playing in a neutral site tournament. They insist we play in an exempt event each year like this one. We get 3 home games vs Campbell, Jackson State and Louisiana and then a money game at Indiana. They want the MONEY, not the chance to grow the program with a quality win. Danny is already lobbying for a spot in the Myrtle Beach tournament next year.
The fact the you are posting this is exactly what is wrong with DD being our coach. YOU and anyone else who is not a part of the program should never know, or be told, this by a head coach of a D1 university.

  • MU basketball is all about fans in the stands.  Meet the number keep your job.  As long as playing in cusa can keep the predetermined averages ooc scheduling can be below average with a money game or two put in.  I?m more concerned about Kinsey?s and Taylor?s play.

This is absolutely correct, and more than anything else, sours me with our head coach. Very few ADs would put up with this crap.

  • It?s cute that Marshall ?fans? can argue about our two major sports.  Maybe they can be rivals since we are always looking for one.

    My thoughts?.

BB is getting disappointing but at least it?s enjoyable and a decent to good atmosphere.  Probably getting a decent return on investment at least in terms of fun and entertainment.

FB feels dead.  No fun home or away.  I still go and am in CLT now.  Shitty return on investment, especially in terms of fun and entertainment.

I have season tickets to both sports and a west lot spot and honestly I don?t know that I?d complain if they said we are getting rid of football.

Obviously we need to win more at both but the apathy for our program feels like it has a lot of momentum.  It?s contagious.  I think I?m starting to come down with it.

    Go Herd!?!  I guess?

You have described my feelings about basketball, the DD ‘good ole boy’ atmosphere can no longer hide his deficiencies as a bench coach and recruiter.

I think it has a lot to due with the culture we live in today. Kids just don't go out and play that much anymore. Growing up, kids in the neighborhood would play basketball all the time. It was not one of the youth leagues. Just a bunch of kids getting together to play a game outdoors. Cold weather killed us because we couldn't play basketball with bulky jackets on. I don't have the numbers, but I would imagine that youth leagues do not have as many kids playing as they did back in my day as a youth.

  • And winning and beating known teams helps drive up attendance.  Need to win home games against known teams.  But JMU will be a rival and draw good attendance over time.  App State too.  Troy there is a bit of bad blood.  Those games were intense.

  • Why do so few students attend the games?    It's been a puzzle for a while.

Not hard to figure.  Hell of a lot more options for entertainment for today's college aged kids than there was when I was at MU decades ago!

Also, for some reason, Marshall's Athletic Department just LOVES to play all Saturday home conference games, at least, AT NIGHT!!  Many college kids want to do a lot of other activities on Saturday evenings, IMO.  Look at our conference schedule, ALL Saturday games at home are at night!  We play UTEP on a Sunday in an afternoon game.  Most of our road Saturday games in the conference are AFTERNOON affairs.  I'd say most all of the other CUSA schools play more January and February Saturday home games (Conference games) in the afternoon.  As many as half or more of such games at many other CUSA schools are in the afternoon.  Yet at MU we don't play ANY!  Why?

Such scheduling doesn't do anything to encourage Herd Fans who live 1, 2 or more hours away from Huntington to be eager to attend Herd basketball games in the dead of winter.  Living two or a little more hours away, I can say from experience that the scheduled game time is often a big factor on whether or not I attend Herd games in the dead of winter, along with the weather!

When we first got into the League, HM, believe UTEP was drawing really well, perhaps 10,000 plus per game.  They have fallen off over the years but I'm still surprised to hear the ODU is outdrawing them.  Thought, too, that Charlotte, with a very nice facility, was drawing pretty well for a few seasons.

I don't remember the numbers and at the moment don't have time to look it up, but CLT is at best #4 in attendance behind ODU, MU and WKU. UTEP is close I believe. Even with the mediocre teams they have had, they are basketball crazy out there. In my trips around the league, I find that the ODU and UTEP fans are the most knowledgeable basketball fans in CUSA. Both those schools along with WKU and Marshall, always have the best tournament following as well no matter the tournament venue

  • if i were forced to choose, id say luke warm at worst, but its also the wrong time of the season for me to seriously consider choosing.

it is important- i genuinely like the product, coaches, 99 percent of the players, a fun and exciting style, all with program integrity.  we are somewhere above average in W-L record.  it somewhat helps to ease the facts that we haven't won conference championships enough, been to the big dance enough and that we've not played and or beaten enough big-time teams.  i do have memories of and miss going unbeaten for long stretches out of the gate as they are few and far between.

if you happen to be conservative you might be thinking we could do worse.  if you are more progressive, you might say we could do better.  no different than other sports although some comparisons might be somewhat apples to oranges.
