  • That was Doc's MO... sit on your hands when you have a lead and play not to lose. Did he ingrain that into our players causing them to dial back their intensity against ECU and Appy? Did Huff deprogram them with the OT win against ODU?

You know, when a new coach comes in often you hear the idea of needing to change the culture.  And that can mean many things I think.  Sitting on a lead was certainly part of the Doc culture, and it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see that mentality had gotten into the heads of the players too.  Now, I don't want to read too much into it, but that mentality of sitting on a lead (and punting from the 30!) were certainly some of what needed to be changed.  I'm not saying it cost us those games...but I would not be willing to say it was a nonfactor either.

Agreed. I mean ECU came back and won 17 down in 7 minutes.  Wasn't even time to sit on a lead.  They found a weakness and exploited it over and over on offense and we couldn't stop them.  And Captain INT took over and gave them what they couldn't get on their own.

  • Rushing plays did.  This was the way.  It was at Navy I knew this way would be a problem.  Speed tempo is not done all game long.  Football will always be a situational game.

  • I think we would be much happier as a fanbase if we focused on what is in front of us than what is behind us.

It's easier said than done. Especially when you see how much damage that was done under Doc and Hamrick. I talk to a lot of Herd fans and I warned of " The Apathy Virus" hitting us. It hit us harder than I ever imagined. I know of at least 50 use to be die hard Herd fans that gave up on us after the 2016 dismal season. Nothing was done about Doc as head coach. Someone on here mentioned that Doc and Hamrick sucked the life out of our program and they were right! It's going to take winning championships and listening to Herd fans to get back to where we use to be. If you remember, the Shewey building secrecy was tighter than Moscow's KGB!! As a reminder do you remember wku beating us 60-6 in 2016? That's when it
all began and hasn't stop. Hopefully, we can feel some Herd excitement again this Saturday and get the win. We owe wku, big time!

  • I?m just piecing together a season and press conferences.

First few weeks we saw a lot of new guys. We had a lot of rotations. Against ECU we played our third set of LBs before halftime. We were rotating like crazy. Huff in his press conference last night mentioned about the back up DBs need to communicate better and how he expects there to be no drop off, but is unsure of how realistic that is.

FAU week he talked about Willie Johnson. He talked about how Willie thought he could not practice and suit of for a game. In his program you practiced all week to play Saturday. This seems to confirm ?Doc guy? mentality.

He has constantly praised Ali?s workman like attitude and being a whiteboard to coaching. This may seem to speak to why he?s stuck with him. He?s constantly mentioned execution. How often did Doc allow kids to get by on talent and that is why lost games we shouldn?t have?

It seems he spent the first few games of the season seeing what he had and sending a message to the veteran kids about his expectations to earn PT. I think that can point to costing us games. The third team struggled hard on D. Had the roster been shrunk down we probably don?t lose those games. And hey I want to win em all, but Coach gave these kids a life lesson in work ethic they won?t soon forget.

  • Nice try, Green Bison.  While I may agree that Doc was often "out to lunch" while roaming the sidelines during many HERD games, I don't think that he has been present, or even spotted, in the same vicinity during the current season!!

  • A Young HC with a misplaced philosophy lost those games.  Huff came in saying he was going to run a tempo that I think looked like Sam Wyche on speed.  Huff has clearly grown from those losses.  MTSU was just a choke job.  Huff should have won the ECU and Appy games.  He just had to slow down the tempo and run some clock.

It seems he has...which is all you can ask for out of a young head coach.  I have no issues with it (now that he has proven to have learned from it) but to pretend those losses are on Doc is just absurd.

one thing for sure is Doc never had confidence in his OL for picking up a first down on 4th and one or two. A family member was a coach before he retired  and he stated you have to go for it on fourth and short in opponents' territory to give your OL the confidence they need from their coaching staff. If the staff doesn't have confidence in them how do they get the confidence they need to push ahead? The Herd's OL has a lot of R-SRs and Jrs and etc. that has memories of those fourth downs that coach Huff is trying to help them forget. Old habits die hard if one doesn't' have the confidence  he can do it. The losses aren't on doc but on his lost confidence in the OL(whcih speaks of execution of plays) and a rookie head coach making some mistakes in his new position. Huff is learning from his mistakes and trying to make a confident  winning team.

No doubt poor clock management cost the ECU game. Strictly on Huff. But I did not think he mismanaged the clock at App State. It looked like he was trying to slow things down to put it away. The problem was we missed a very makable FG, and the defense could not stop Nate Noel late in the game.

MTSU was a fluke that may never happen again. 6 fumbles that led to how many points? Imo, we should be 9-2 right now with the way Huff has coached. ECU was his fault, and UAB is a straight up matchup nightmare for us.
