  • Nice put back before the half to answer a MSU 3. Wheeler sat quite a bit there and the team did fine.

46-40 Herd up at the half on the Big Ten Network.

  • Herd misses a uncontested bunny, two foul shots, and a jumper to start the 4th Qtr.  Not good.  Playing hard, lot of effort.  Many tos by both teams!

  • Michigan State will win this. Too many unforced turnovers by Marshall in the 2nd half ruined an excellent opportunity to get this win. Kemper had them coached up well but he really needed to use his timeouts sooner and settle them down mid 4th quarter. Michigan State seemed to not miss a free throw in the 2nd half.

  • Dumb, bonehead foul at the end by MU gives Spartans opportunity for a 10 point win.  Not indicative of how close game was overall.  MU has very little talent on the front line.  Can't make bunny shots, lay ups, etc.  2 solid guards, and not much else, to be honest.

Herd should be decent in CUSA play, especially against teams with not much strong front line talent.

Team plays very well, led with less than 5 minutes to play, and this is what you get.

At least he's consistent, looks like the women's bball coach must have wronged him as much as DD did.

Did you watch the game, wbb?  Inside game, or lack thereof, killed us.  All I said.  MSU's Coach adjusted, wasn't going to let our best guard and outside shooter beat them singled handed.  Last Herd foul, with about 10 seconds or less was just STUPID, tacked on 2 more points to final score.  TV clearly showed Coach Kemper on the sidelines telling our player who fouled (Colclough?) the SAME THING!

Overall we played pretty well on the road against a Big 10 team who was 5-0 at home coming in.  I said that bodes well for the HERD Women in CUSA play except for possibly good teams with inside play who can hurt or exploit us.

Don't get your panties in a wad!  Besides, a HERD win today would have put Coach K ONE UP on Danny D in his second or third season.  That wouldn't do among the "Danny Licker" Crowd, would it?

  • Both roundball teams represented themselves and the university well in the Big10 this weekend. Yes, they did get rattled at the end, but all good experience. Only lost to Purdue at Purdue by a few as well.

And Purdue, perhaps, is a little better than initially thought.  Believe that they beat a ranked Florida State team today.

So you just called a player stupid for committing a foul that didn?t matter, and you name a player who didn?t commit the foul.

The foul was absolutely meaningless but you act like you lost money on it or something. Margin of victory doesn?t matter one bit. The women?s team wasn?t there for a moral victory.

One of those two ?solid? guards had 30 points for us. Lots of good to build on.

Marshall has a 6?1 girl who is hurt and out for the year who would have been an interior factor. 6?1 isn?t tall by any means in the women?s game but she?s a pretty good shot blocker anyway.

And if you watch any women?s basketball, you?ll see a lot of bad moments within games by even the elite schools. It is what it is. We rebounded pretty well despite a severe height disadvantage.

Michigan State won it at the FT line. They were 32-35, including 16-16 in the fourth quarter. Officiating seemed to help them get there a few times, too.

Read much, ThF?  Obiously NOT for comprehension.

Said the silly foul less than 10 seconds to go in the game was STUPID!  Not the player who committed it.  BIG DIFFERENCE.  Probably the same thing that Coach Kemper told her as was shown along the sidelines right after it happened.

Agree with the foul situation.  Bet MSU was no where close to the shooting percentage from the stripe they had against MU in any other game so far this season.  Game analyst said the Spartans needed, down the stretch, to take advantage of their height since MU had no player over 6'1".  Didn't know we had a player out for the game.

Believe if the Herd women play play with the same effort that did at MSU they should be competitive in CUSA play.  Believe they will be hurting  against League teams with strong front lines.

  • It's gotten where people can't offer an objective take on the game without others jumping all over them.  There's not a damn thing wrong or negative about anything you wrote, Coal.  It's just your analysis of the game.  Anyone offended is looking for you to offend them and finding what they're looking for.  It had already been noted that they played a good game.  I kept reading to see if anyone had any more depth to talk about, which you did.  So thanks for that.  Don't let the over-sensitive crowd dissuade you from writing what you think.  I usually enjoy your take on things and it's pretty easy to tell that you watch a LOT of basketball and you seem to know a lot about every team we play.  It is also appreciated by some to hear what's going wrong when something is going wrong and not just sweep it under the rug under the "they played a good game" blanket.  The details matter.  The details often separate a win and a loss.

Great observation THF. Their coach had the audacity to blame "bad calls" on the IU bigs in the post-game. After MSU basically won the game at the foul line.

I read very well. You are calling the player stupid and trying to word around it. Go tell Colclough?s father what you said about the team, his daughter (who didn?t even commit the foul in question), and the lack of talent she has since she?s one of those front line players you dished on.  See how that goes for you. I?m sure he?ll be at Saturday?s game in the Cam. Go heckle the team in person for missing close in shots against players 3-4 inches taller than them in traffic (yes, we missed two that were uncontested. Watch women?s bball. It happens to pretty much every team), scream at them for not being talented enough for your liking.

There are lots of objective things to look at from that game. You want to throw out the baby with the bath water. We aren?t going to get more talented overnight. We are what we are. So the team has to work within that. By that I mean they have to play the last minute like they played the first 39, when they were down 2 with the ball with 1 minute left. They need to clean up some things. But this is as talented as they?ve been in awhile 1-8.  And in CUSA, it will be enough to compete toward the top of the league as long as they remain healthy. Dunham was a HUGE pickup and is a perfect compliment to Wheeler in the backcourt.

We?re still a CUSA school in a sport where there is a large discrepancy in haves and have-nots. We played two P5?s that are historically very good to 10 point games on the road. Didn?t play well at Purdue, played 39 good minutes at MSU. Close to being as good as we can be but not there yet.

I also think you?d really like Coach Kemper. I thought he did a tremendous job Sunday of keeping the team mentally in the game through the officiating. You saw very little squabbling, not because the officiating was good, but because we accepted it was going to be rough and played through it. That impressed me as much as anything.

Calling someone's action "stupid", "dumb", is not, in itself, calling the person the same.  If you are too "stupid", or "dumb" to realize the difference, then no point in conversing further, I guess.  On one other point re: the "haves" and "have nots", on just about every night during the season there will be "have nots" coming out with wins over "haves", including in our own Conference.  Stop with that as an excuse.  And, yes, collectively our front court players as a whole are a major deficiency in our women's team.  May not show up when we play those NAIA and D2 opponents, but in D1 play against good teams, like our last two Big 10 foes, it stands out greatly.

Marshall outscored MSU in the paint, 34-30. Their 6?3 starting forward had 20 points and 6 rebounds. Their 6?3 forward off the bench had 9 pts and 3 rebounds. Colclough had 19 points and one rebound on 8-12 shooting from the floor. Roper had 4 points and 5 rebounds. That means their interior players had 6 more points than ours (11-12 from the FT line, ours were 2-2).  Those two outrebounded our two forwards by 3.  MSU outrebounded us by 8, but a closer look shows we missed 9 more shots than they did. 12 total if you count free throws. We had more O-boards than they did which fits those numbers just mentioned. They had 16 second chance points, we had 8.  So they were much more effective than us on second chance but we held our own with them.

They were beatable, though. Hated that Wright State had to cancel. Our level of play was good against MSU for 39 minutes and I was hoping to see if we could build upon that.

  • Here's the deal THF...if the Womens basketball program wants people to follow them, support them, invest in them etc....then criticism comes with that territory. Whether you like the comments or not, it's a good thing because it means people actually care and are paying attention to the womens basketball program.

Fair criticism is fine!  I agree, criticism is better than silence and it?s not even close. That?s why as much as I hate a football loss and the snide remarks that go with them, I?m just glad people still care.

Coal?s criticism was a bit outrageous and misguided considering the ballgame Marshall played against Michigan State on the road. There wasn?t a single positive within his post, and it was clear he watched the game with narrow focus. I understand that? the most criticism comes when the most eyes are on you. But I?m pretty sure coal doesn?t really like sports or anything. He?s just nothing but negative on any of his posts about anything at all.

I?m trying to draw him out of that nothing but negative idea to find some balance. He?s correct when he says we missed a couple of point blank shots. That?s exactly what happened. But he has to follow it up with a remark bashing the kids? talent/ability. That?s the unnecessary part. Even within his criticism, which he almost always has a point, he runs right on past where he needs to go so he can embellish it.

He wants attention, I?ll give him attention this season.

He bashed a kid who scored 19 points on 8-12 shooting against Michigan State. That was unfair criticism and he?s yet to say a good thing about how she played. Not one. I won?t let that go unchallenged.

  • This was the first women's game I have watched in a LONG time and it took me a while to realize that missing point blank shots is just part of the women's game.

I truly wish they would lower the rims to 9' for women so they could dunk on each other and make the game way more exciting.

Again, THF, you display an abysmal lack of reading comprehension.   So I said "nothing positive" about the Herd team?  READ my FIRST POST on the thread.  After noting we missed shots starting  the 4th period, I commented, "Playing hard, lot of effort."   Nothing positive?  Are you just stupid, or trying to be a "JERK"?

Bashing a player?  Called an unnamed player's action in fouling with less than 10 seconds to go a stupid move.  It was unnecessary, and, again, I'm sure Coach Kemper in so many words said the same thing.  And, if you don't know, the TV announcers did NOT identify whom the last foul was on.  I wasn't sure either, and when I posted I put a Herd player's name in parentheses with a question mark behind it.  See for yourself!  That's not bashing.  Go back and look, I mentioned NO other HERD players in any of my posts.

So if you want to try and make arguments over things that didn't happen, you are either just wanting to argue for the sake of it, or just to prove that you are a POS.  Again, you need to read more carefully if you want to argue posts.  As a rookie, guess it is to be expected.  Clear that you have a lot to learn, "junior"!

My reading comprehension is just fine.

We outscored them in the paint.  You?re still hung up on a foul that didn?t matter at all. And Colclough (one of those inside players you said ?killed us,? scored 19 points.

CUSA women?s bball has been highly competitive. Rice was in the Top 25 last year. We beat them at home (they had a 6?9 center), then they won the WNIT. WKU and ODU have great programs. Louisiana Tech, too. They?re not anywhere near where they used to be since the women?s landscape has changed over the past 25 years.  I think we can compete in the upper tier of the league, and a lot of that is because of our inside players. The guards are great but they can?t and won?t do it alone.

Well at least on a couple thing, mainly your last 2 sentences, we can certainly agree. :)  I'll hesitate to assess how good our inside players and game will be until we have a few more games under our belt.

Hopefully, Coach K can find a replacement for the cancelled game with Wright State.  Sort of difficult to do in season, but perhaps some other team within a reasonable distance may run into the same problem and will be looking for a game.  We have a little open time, 8 days, after the game with Coppin on Saturday.

Hey, maybe you know about a former Herd player, Shy, I believe.  Did she leave the program, out this season, transfer, etc.  Thought she still had some eligibility left.

Shy transferred to Youngstown State. She?s starting and scoring nearly 11 ppg and getting close to 6 rpg. Shooting 35% from 3.
